Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Building Territories

Have a couple questions that i was curious about!

From what i can tell magic exists in Canis to some degree so when it comes to finding territories on Canis, how much control over it do I have in creating/suggesting it? ?

Also how much can i get away with suspending someone's disbelief before its too much/ considered unrealistic or branches into staff territory?

I wanted to have a territory that has "sub-biomes" for a lack of a better word for my Fey inspired pack (where magic or at least the belief in it is a part of their culture). Something that would fit the seasonal courts. So like winter would have some kind of tundra climate, autumn would have a coniferous biome, spring might have rolling hills and open fields, etc etc. Essentially its like a duchy in Meris Kingdom.

Hopefully this all makes sense!

Depends on a few things. Canis is a world with a realistic base but yes as you said has some magical elements (the land only not the creatures). This is known as intrusion fantasy and can be compared to the wonkiness you find in a dream. Everything appears how you would expect but with some twists here and there that logically might not make sense.

When creating territory you are free to describe the territory as you please. it is your time to contribute something to the shared world and that can include elements that lightly bend realistic settings you’d find on earth (such as an eternal autumn forest or perma winter). This “intrusion” only affects the territory submitted meaning characters may find themselves confused or disorientated if they come across a territory that has light magic elements, especially if you place it next to a polar opposite territory (ex. Frozen forest next to hot desert)

Also how much can i get away with suspending someone's disbelief before its too much/ considered unrealistic or branches into staff territory?

I’m not entirely sure what you mean by this, but there is a reason we have member made territories submitted. If there is an issue staff will reach out to amend issues and work with players to achieve the vision in a similar manner if their original concept wouldn’t be allowed.

As for your last question, subterritories will eventually be an “officially” documented thing with their own thread prefix or markers, but in the mean time you are free to reference sub territories and points of interests as you please. This is especially common in packs where the pack admins might post a thread in their packs sub forum listing their “cannon” sub territories. (I can show you an example of mine when I’m off work)

For the sake of the territory you submit if you do a very extensive inner territory system, try to explain the territory as a whole versus listing these sub territories in the description. You have the option to include additional info in an expanded description but the main one should be simple to understand and get the gist of the territory. What I mean by this is explain how the mountain has forested foothills that roll into plains etc to make up the territory maybe look at arenrak as an example since I wrote a few different things going on in that territory in the description.

When it comes to the map visual we can talk and I can work in those sub territory visuals even if they aren’t fully described in the territory. If you have any questions or need me to reword this lmk! Typed it quickly on my work break. Feel free to dm me on discord too I’ll probably be faster.
