Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

I call upon you, spirits. Guide me. Find me a place to call home. To call Silatukvik.

She'd spoken the words countless times to the sky, hoping that they were listening.

Endless days. Endless nights.

And finally, when a wintry landscape came upon her eye, she breathed a sigh of relief. This place. It called to her. She knew it from the moment the peaks drew up in the distance and the beautiful evergreens danced, snow glistening atop their branches. Not yet had she seen it all, nor what further awaited her within the glacier gates. But soon.

Yes, this might be home.

A bit of a short one, but who doesn't love short and sweet :3 @Vawraek

With an expression full of warmth, she traveled with a bit of a bounce in her step. She was like an overly eager child, too excited to see still.

Giggling with delight at what the spirits had guided her to, she bounded forward, then dipped low, rolling her small figure into the blanket of snow. It was heavenly, to finally have a place that felt like home. She could be at peace here, and make sure others would be as well.

notes here

Well… whatever this darling little creature was doing she was clearly enjoying herself rolling through the powdery snow and giggling out loud to herself. He huffed, finch yellow eyes wandering over her frame as he continued to silent watch. Completely and utterly unaware of the shift of the breeze giving his position away. He clearly still had a lot to learn about being a wolf.

The wind suddenly shifted, and her freeing display ceased.

Stumbling up to her feet, she sniffed at the air, wary, but curious. “Hello?” She called out, wondering if someone was there, or if her nose was simply playing tricks on her.

It seemed he was had. The wind announced his presence without him knowing until she called out. He grumbled silently to himself before exiting the undergrowth he found shelter in. Vawraek prowled closer, disgruntled, but otherwise relaxed. "Hey." He grumbled.

So she wasn't losing her mind. Good to know!

A man appeared from where he had been lurking. It was a bit odd—more like awkward—with how much she had to crane her neck to actually meet his eyes. But she didn't let her expression go to show the slight discomfort. She met him with only an inviting smile.

“I admit, I'm a bit surprised to see anyone else out here. Have you been through here before?” The question came with a hint of awing wonder, curious to know if he had explored this land prior and might be able to show her more of it.

Vawraek didn’t think of himself as particularly tall—until he found himself standing in front of the striking white-haired beauty—at which point he became acutely aware of his towering stature. Her delicate features were framed by cascading locks that seemed to shimmer under the ambient light of the sun reflecting off the snow, and he felt a twinge of something like chivalry strike him as he watched her tilt her head back just to meet his gaze. He winced internally; the last thing he wanted was to come off like some overgrown giant, but there was an odd thrill in the power balance that amused him greatly. He was accustomed to looking down at others, but this was a different kind of height—a vulnerability in her posture that struck him as peculiar despite his amusement.

Her welcoming smile, though, made it all worthwhile. It was warm, inviting, like sunlight breaking through a gloomy sky, and it coaxed him into a conversation he was half-inclined to avoid. There was something about her presence that made him want to linger a little longer, despite his natural aversion to small talk. He let a careless shrug roll off his broad shoulders, a practiced nonchalance designed to mask how much she compelled him to stay. “Nah,” he drawled, his voice a smooth baritone that rumbled through the air like rolling thunder. “Just got here m’self. Came up from the South—don’t go there unless you fancy being crushed by floating rocks.” His words tumbled out with a mix of jest and edge, a sharp little grin dancing across his lips as his finch-yellow eyes sparked with amusement.

“Smart girl,” he grunted, a breezy little smile dancing on his lips, his voice deep and velvety smooth, like the rich blend of bourbon and dark chocolate. Vawraek couldn’t shake the impression that anyone with even half a brain cell would steer clear of those magical floating rocks that defied all logic and gravity. The packs that called that treacherous place home? They were a breed he'd rather not tangle with. Insanity was a double-edged sword, and he had no intention of being cut.

As she posed her question, Vawraek's ears twitched, the movement almost imperceptible, and he drew a deep breath through his nose, his eyes narrowing slightly as he considered his response. The truth was, he'd reached the end of his rope, or rather, the end of his endurance. He'd made it as far as he could from those damned rocks, and the thought of venturing back into that maelstrom of magic and madness was enough to make his skin crawl. If he kept going, he'd likely end up right back where he started, which was a prospect he didn't particularly relish. And as for witches... well, he'd yet to find one who could help him with his rather... delicate problem. So it seemed he was stuck, at least for the time being, and the thought of wandering aimlessly, driven solely by his instincts, was a bleak one. For now, he was at the mercy of his own paws, but one thing was certain: he wouldn’t be heading south again unless the universe conspired to drag him there, kicking and screaming. So, at the end of the day? No plans, just wherever this unpredictable path led him.

Still, there was something about this place, and this woman, that made him hesitant to leave just yet. Perhaps, he thought, with a sly glint in his eye, he might even find a way to pass the time, and get his... needs met, shall we say.

A charming grin spread across his face, his lips curling up in a mischievous smile as he replied, "Lonely?" he teased, his voice dripping with amusement. "This place seems to be interesting enough for me to stick around, at least for a little while longer." His yellow eyes sparkled with amusement as he gazed out at the winter landscape, the snow-covered trees and rolling hills stretching out before them like a breathtaking canvas. "You?" he asked, his voice low and husky, his eyes locking onto her as he waited for a response to his unspoken question.

"Lonely?" He asked, as though he could read her very thoughts. Or maybe it was too plainly shown, the desperation clear in her eyes.

“And who says I'm lonely?” A playful glare shoots pointedly up at him. But it was only a tease. A jest, really. Somehow, she enjoyed the idea of toying with him just a bit. Perhaps in more ways than one. He was a fine looking man, after all. And as much as her parents had always taught her never to stray from man to man, maybe he wasn't the type to bed a woman and then take off. Or so she hoped.

“I have been quite occupied as of late, trying to find a place to build a village... a home,” As Kirain had put it plainly. That must be what others here called it. “This place seems rather suitable for the idea. It reminds me greatly of my birthplace. I just haven't had much of a chance to explore it just yet.” Perhaps he would stay and adventure the unknown land with her?

“Certainly not I, miss,” he replied, a roguish grin breaking across his features, as if the very thought of casting blame was a laughable endeavor for someone as charmingly insouciant as himself. He was quietly pleased that she met him halfway with his playfulness. It was all rather sudden when just a few moments ago Vawraek was content to stalk her in the shadows rather than hold a conversation with her. But, he was also used to the sudden and visceral mood changes that tended to plague him from time to time.

“A home?” He cast another sweeping glance across the desolate northern landscape, his brow arching in bemusement as he took in the stark beauty surrounding them. The icy expanse stretched endlessly, its stillness almost taunting. He turned back to her, the faintest hint of skepticism dancing across his features. He couldn’t fathom how anyone could find solace in such a frozen wasteland, but oddly enough, he found himself acknowledging a certain allure to the wilderness—the sharp, biting air and the raw, untouched solitude. The snowy expanse was indeed picturesque, a canvas brushed with white, but beauty and comfort were not always bedfellows. “If you say so…” he murmured, trailing off as bittersweet memories of his own home clawed their way up from the depths of his mind. He huffed softly, an exasperated breath, shaking off the visions as if they were mere specters in the snow.

“If you wanna freeze your tits off up here, be my guest,” he continued, a smirk teasing at the corner of his lips as he gestured dramatically to the expanse of white. “I don’t think anyone will really challenge you for it.” He chuckled softly, the sound low and rich, reminiscent of the soft crackling of a distant fire. “Not if they intend to keep their extremities intact, in any case.”

“But if you’re so adamant about calling this place home, it would be remiss of me not to accompany a lady.” He drew himself up to his full height, an inviting gesture punctuated by a flourish of his outstretched paw as if to say, ‘lead the way.’ “So… shall we?”

He was mocking her. Surely. Did he not see the beauty in the highlands that he did?

She scoffed at his words, her brows drawing down in an expression of contempt. “You make it sound as though it is a worthless land. But I see beauty in it. Potential.” Or maybe she really was crazy and thought too highly of it.

But no, it couldn't be. The spirits had led her here for a reason. And she would continue to be hopeful.

“I have hopes for it. And whether you believe them or not is your decision.” She would not let some stranger sway her, nor her make her seem foolish in the way her ideas are farfetched. “It will be a peaceful place. I do not incite violence, nor will allow it. Those that wish to bring harm here will be turned away, or chased away.” And she would be firm on that very particular idea.

But he would stay. This surprised her greatly. She was skeptical, for only a moment though. Receding her doubt in him, for now, she nodded, her expression softening. “We cannot cover much ground with the day fading. But we can at least get through the evergreens and find a place to rest for the night.”

When sure he was following, she turned and lead the way, determination now firm with each step she took.
