This time, Ilya's wanderings had taken him to the sea.
The dusky-hued wolf stared down the steep cliff at the still, murky waters far below. Water made him nervous. It always had, ever since he had been a child--and he had never been a strong swimmer. Yet he found himself unable to tear his gaze away from the abyss he now looked upon. What dwelled there, in those unseeing depths? What entities awaited anyone unfortunate enough to fall?
Ilya blinked and shook his head.
“Probably nothing to worry about,” he muttered to himself, backing away from the cliff's edge. In doing so, he realized that he had nearly backed into another wolf. Someone had arrived while he had been staring at the waves.
“Sorry, I didn't notice you. I was...” he began quickly. Ilya trailed off, uncertain. The water... His ears twitched at the memory of the inky-dark void that still loomed in his mind. ...Just how long had he been here, anyway? “I was looking at the water. Is this your home?”
