Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Unknown place somewhere in Furud

What a dreadful place—how could the cold be so relentless?

The vast expanse stretching beneath Azamora’s golden gaze was the mirror image of the desert she had once known, save for one cruel exchange: the scorching sand had been traded for a merciless, biting snow. She held fast, unyielding, but this unrelenting frost would soon wear down even her formidable resilience. In the distance, she had seen something rise— somthing that, in her homeland, heralded a sandstorm. Here, it was a harbinger of an icy tempest, a furious lash of cold that would fall upon her like an executioner’s blade. She would not survive it. She knew this with a certainty as stark as the land around her.

But the desert woman had been fortunate enough to find salvation in what appeared to be the dark maw of a cavern, small and unassuming, but promising shelter. Agile and slight, she had slipped inside, vanishing into its depths, where she found herself in a strange warren of tunnels. No longer did the wicked wind claw at her skin — though the chill still clung to the air, here at least it did not howl through her bones.

She moved with the silent grace of a predator, cautious, deliberate, as she wound her way through the labyrinthine passages. She could see light seeping in from various spots — it was possible to enter this place from more than one way. This subterranean refuge had once been home to others— wayfarers, exiles, lost souls seeking sanctuary in its depths. The scent of coal lingered in the air, the ghost of an old fire where men had gathered, seeking warmth against the merciless elements. But beneath it, subtler, more ominous, was the faint tang of blood—a testament to the struggles that had once played out in these very corridors. These rock-hewn entrails had been the stage for untold stories, the echoes of which still clung to the cavern walls. And there, among the remnants of forgotten lives, lay a trail—footprints.

Fresh ones.
Larger and heavier than her own.

Instinct seized her as she melted against the cavern wall, pressing her flanks to the rough stone, seeking out the sanctuary of shadow, willing herself to become nothing, to vanish into the darkness. Each step forward was a measured whisper, her senses sharpened to a blade’s edge.

Then— suddently the ground, slick with hidden peril, gave way beneath her, and for a breathless moment, the abyss yawned wide to claim her. But she was stranger to the earth’s cruelty no more. She caught herself just in time, wrenching free from the hungry void.

Yet the moment had betrayed her.
A breath, a mere whisper of sound, had escaped her lips—a gasp, slight and fleeting, but in the cavern’s hush, it was a war cry. The walls carried it outward, sending it rippling through the hollowed corridors, reverberating into the furthest, unseen depths.

If she was not alone, she had just heralded her own presence.
And now, without question, something—someone—knew she was here.
