Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

The night was still and peaceful.

Tupa wondered if it had always been that way, here. This life felt so freeing and joyous, like nothing bad could have ever happened in this place. The moon overhead was full and glowing, sending cool, soft light down to earth, glistening off the frost-coated grass like thousands of glittering stars.

The wind whispered in his ears, but he could not understand. He was meant to understand, he knew, but try as he might, the wind just sounded like the wind.

But the moon was bright. The grasses were swaying. The sky was alight with stars.

It seemed a safe haven. The wind brushed against the grain of Tupannguac's fur, chilling his spine where he sat, staring upward.

He suddenly got the feeling that he was not alone.

Not alone. Never alone.

The storm of a wolf had found his moonswept brother finally, a boon to his restless soul. He had woken days ago now, on his own in this strange land, washed up on a shore that he couldn't remember from before. He also could not recall how he had gotten here, or even how he'd ended up in the water to begin with. Had there even been an ocean near where they had been staying.

And still he had not been alone. The storm of his forefathers was always with him.

Approaching the younger man, Tevirkaryuk greeted him with a rough butt of his head to the browned shoulder he knew well from years of living alongside him. Was Tupannguaq alone also? Or had he found the others? His scent suggested the former.

Tevirkaryuk approached and Tupannguac's body relaxed as the older man bumped his shoulder. The mottled wolf had always made Tupa feel less unmoored - more grounded, more secure. A comfort attained only through the knowing of him for a lifetime and a few days.

"Tevir," he rumbled, pleased, golden eyes narrowed in a smile. He leaned into the other wolf with a soft sigh, tail thumping once or twice on the ground behind him. If he was now partially using the warrior as a windshield, he had the grace not to point it out.

He did not take his eyes off the moon. "It is a lovely night," he said, only then sending a glance Tevirkaryuk's way. "The sky looks the same here as it did before. Yet it feels so different."
