Beautiful beginnings don't always follow with beautiful endings, and such is the case of Ferris Yahn. Born to a young couple in love, Darin and Poppy Yahn, life was difficult from the very beginning. Alongside his two siblings, sister Cree and brother Nikolas, their newly-fledged mother vanished right after their birth. Left to the elements, he and his siblings were lucky to have survived long enough for his father and the Northern Order to discover them and bring them into the shelter the pack offered. Brought to the pack's caregiver, Zehnai, Ferris grew for the next five months believing the woman to be his biological mother, and her brood: Eerik, Astrid and Aksel Holt, to be his siblings right alongside Cree and Nikolas. However, soon into his fourth month of age, his father told them of their true heritage and what had become of their mother. Refusing to believe her just simply 'gone,' Ferris convinced his brother Nikolas to leave home with him and venture out into the world to look for her.
After traveling together for a month, an earthquake shook the earth and separated the boys. Ferris continued to search for his mother, believing his brother would do the same. A month later, he was found by a man named Three-Leg who had befriended his sister and was searching on her behalf to find her brothers. Not wanting to return home without his mother, a fight ensued between the two until Ferris reluctantly agreed to follow Three-Leg back home to the Emerald Labyrinth. After a few weeks of travel, the two reached their destination and Ferris is reunited with his father. Upon returning home, however, Darin informed him that his adoptive mother, Zehnai, had died of rabies and that all of his siblings both biological and adoptive had left the pack. Following the trails of his siblings, he reunites with them, but is ultimately rejected by both Cree and Nikolas, as well as their Chief Solomon. Without so much as a goodbye, Ferris ran away once more to start a new life for himself.
Turning seven months of age, Ferris had found himself at the cliffside of the valley's mountain. During an attempt to grieve all he'd lost, an avalanche shook the mountains and Ferris fell into an icey lake below the mountains. Rescued by a woman of the mountains who saw his fall, Toska, he was nursed back to health. Because of his fall, he had temporary amnesia, but soon regained his memories when he was healthy enough to travel on his own again and revisited the place of his fall. While he had opened up to the woman who saved him, Ferris became very cold and hardened from all the loss in his life and felt that being nursed back to health was his second chance to have a better life.
Going separate ways from Toska, he reunited with another child of the Northern Order named Tara Dusk. He became instantly infatuated with her, and the two became close friends. Soon after his first birthday, the two decided to leave the valley in search for a new home. Traveling together, they became even closer, and several months later they settled into a new valley. There, he met Pierre, another boy from the same native valley. The three became good friends until one day, Pierre vanished. Although his anger was not directed towards his new friend, Ferris felt fate had slighted him further and grew cold against making new friends. He and Tara lived an easy, comfortable life with one another until one day, he awoke alone in Canis.
