Arundel is a follower of Avar, born and raised within the Avarshina Sublinia.
Avar Is:
- Genderless
- Creator of the earth and all things
- Grants protection and longevity to those who serve
- All things good or bad can be summed up as Avar’s wishes either through blessings (good things) or blights (bad things)
- Favors wolves who do not back down from a challenge
- Bloodthirsty, though this is often tucked away
- Unforgiving and merciless
- Described as a wolf of solid gold with eyes of fire, larger than a mountain, with a voice like a landslide and tears that flood the lands
-Favorswolves of earthen tones such as brown, olive, auburn, tan, blue, auburn and gray.
- Not PreferredWolves of charcoal, yellow, and silver.
- Hated, disliked, and often culled Wolves with White, Black, and agouti
Practices of Avar
- Wolves who die early in life were either highly sought (did well in the eyes of Avar) or blighted to the nether (did poorly in the eyes of Avar)
- Bones are a sacred symbol of Avar and should be kept as a prized collection and may be traded amongst members for favors/used as a currency
- At the spring equinox and winter soulstice each year, a wolf must be sacrificed. Usually these are outsiders so as not to risk valuable members to the pack. They must be expendable wolves.
- Novitiate wolves are convinced that giving themselves to Avar in this sacrifice is the single most important thing they could ever do and that their death will deliver them to glory
- If no novitiates are found outside of the pack then the next most-useless wolf (sorry) is put up for sacrifice, chosen by the lead wolf
- Useful wolves (in the leader’s eyes) will never be put up for sacrifice as they are needed to keep the pack going
- In war or a dangerous situation, disposable wolves are sent as much as possible. If lost, they will be said to have died an honorable death. Wolves who refuse this burden are shunned.
- Shuns last a minimum of a week, and a maximum of forever (or until they prove themselves again)
- Wolves have three names. Their birth name, their oath name (the primary name), and their true name (chosen by themselves and rarely shared)
- Free will is encouraged, but wolves are pushed to do what is “right” in Avar’s eyes rather than what is ethical. This can mean setting aside their personal beliefs and choose what the leader says Avar would want
- Wolves as a whole are taught about pleasing Avar, but no one is forced to and there may be outliers who disbelieve or only follow for their own reasons
- To be initiated into the pack a wolf must take the oath and the mark (a crisscross bite on the right flank), or be sent away as unworthy. The oath is as follows: “Let me aspire to be perfect as Avar, so that Avar's light bring me glory”
- May kidnap wolves or puppies to bend to their needs
- Members are taught that eating their dead is acceptable as Avar has blessed them with meat, and no meat should be wasted (they are not forced to partake in this)
- Wolves who mess up are sent away; wolves who mess up badly might be killed.
