Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Once again, Elke woke.

Later then some of the others, she lifted her head up in a groan, feeling as though she had the equivalent of a horrible hangover. Her body was still, sore. Her head felt light and despite feeling like she had slept for months she was tired and groggy.

Looking around, she realized very quickly she was not home. In fact, she was in a type of land she had never been in her life. Warm golden sand was below her and all around. The trees were odd, palms which she had never seen before in her life. The closest thing she could think of to this was the red sand canyon back in her old world.

Panic set in. Had she died, again? Her heart pounding heavy, she began to pant as she drew herself up to a sit, looking around out far. In the distance, she saw the silhouette of a mountain. A very familiar mountain. She began to ease, knowing home was not far. Her family would be worried, however. She rarely left her pack's claim and not for long when she did. How long had she been out here? How did she even get out here??

There were several confusing factors about the position Osiris found himself in. However, the most perturbing was that the land seemed to change during the deep freeze. There wasn't a desert close to The Nameless Mountain before, and although he had traveled east, Crescent Cove was nowhere to be found. Although this should have been more alarming to him than it was, he knew that he couldn't waste time mulling over the complexities of this land. Strange things had happened before, and he was sure they would happen again, and there was nothing he could do about it. He had to accept this warped reality and carry on.

He had never been in a desert, and navigating the terrain was more challenging than expected. His paws kept sliding into the ground, causing him to use more energy, and he found that he was tiring quickly. That wasn't the only reason why he was wearing himself out. The sun shined strongly overhead, and there was no escaping it. There was no forest or anything that could protect him from the heat.

Osiris paused on the crest of a hill to take a break, but his searching continued. He searched his surroundings, hoping to catch sight of anything of interest, and found Elke near a cluster of odd-looking trees. He stood quickly and hoped his eyes weren't deceiving him.

"Elke?" he called, his voice coming out hoarser than he had expected, "Is that you?" It had to be.

It was a weird place, she thought. At the edges of the oasis, she looked at the swaying fronds of the palm trees in their big fanned shape. The sands were golden, hot to walk on. Sands like the beaches of the cove that once were in Eymprean's back yard but, not.

She didn't go out into that great nothingness. For now, she panted as she kept under the trees which offered what little bit of shade they could from the heated weight of the sun above.

“Osiris?!” Her head perked up, looking out to her cousin on the crest of a sand dune. Her lavender gaze narrowed, trying to see past the rays of heat around him. “Where are we??”

"I don't know," Osiris admitted. Although he was relieved that he'd found Elke, they weren't out of the woods—no, desert—yet. There was still a lot that they had to accomplish before they were home free. "This place appeared out of nowhere. I have no idea how it happened." He had learned to not think too hard about the logic of this world—he never could make sense of any of it.

"Are you okay?" he asked next, knowing his plans to get them out of here revolved around this answer. She appeared fine from a distance, but he couldn't say for sure without her confirmation.

"Can you walk?"

“This world, it's an odd one...” The words spoken lowly, though knew his wolven senses would allow him to hear her well enough. There is a frown on her features, silken ears turning back against her skull. Though her aunt had protest it, Elke had believed upon arriving here, they had died. Elke's memories of fire and rock on the Moonspear clouding her ability to see otherwise. This place, she felt, was an afterlife (or at least a second life) of sorts, which to her explained seeing figures dancing in the skies and magic of lands and wolves appearing and disappearing as they were.

She didn't speak these things. Not to anyone and didn't know if she ever would.

“Yes, yes... I'm fine, I think?” She spoke as she lifted herself up off the ground and away from the cover of the palm tree and out toward her cousin. “I feel like I've slept through all winter...”

"This world, it's an odd one..." Elke said lowly, and Osiris agreed. "Odd" was a polite way of putting it, and he had a few choice words about their ever-changing world.

He was relieved to hear that she was fine—but, it was strange to hear that she also felt like she'd slept through winter. "It's a lot warmer than yesterday," especially here in the desert. He'd never felt so overheated.

"I can help you get up the hill if you need," he offered, referring to the dune he stood on. "The sand is hard to climb, and you've just woken up." He remembered how awful he'd felt when he woke up and could only imagine how worse she probably felt in this sweltering heat.

Yesterday? Did she even remember yesterday? Elke pondered a moment but could not recall. She knew winter had been stirring. There was little foliage to work with left as far as herbs went. Now, it was far hotter then Elke could ever remember being but maybe it was just because they somehow found themselves in the desert. Their mountain home was not like this and hopefully now that the desert didn't seem far off from their mountains, their home hadnt changed like the lands around them had.

“Okay...” She spoke lowly as he offered to help her up the dune, her brows knitting together as she began full on concentration. Living in the mountains was hard on your feet and she had calloused and cut herself more times then she could remember. The burning sands would have been worse if she had lived only in forests, plains or marshes her whole life. Still, the sun was hot on her coal back and her limbs shook like a baby deer's as she tried to navigate the churning sands.

“OH hell...!” Then suddenly, as she got half way onto the incline it was as though the sand melted away from under her feet and before she could catch herself, her snout was in the sand. “Ossruss were were you!” She shouted from her burial.

Osiris didn't make it in time to catch Elke when she fell. Although the incline had given him a bit of momentum, it wasn't enough. Sand sprayed every which way as he scrambled to her side; even the burning sand couldn't stop him from helping his cousin.

"I'm here," he said once he was beside her. "Let's get you up—use me as support." He braced himself for the added weight and lowered his head so she could use his neck to push herself onto all fours.

And so quickly, Elke would scramble herself onto her cousin, using him to step on as she tried to get herself onto all fours once again. She was being dramatic about it too, purposefully.

Once upright, she leaned into him still for support, her head turned to him to shook him a hard scowl for having let her eat dirt sand like that! “Let's get out of here...” Sand was definitely not her forte.
