Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Discontentment came before comfort; each of Qiuyue’s eyes blinked open independent of the other while she decided whether to appreciate or question the sudden calm. Wherever she was, it wasn’t where she’d been before, and the people she’d been around seemed to have disappear.

She started lifting herself upright to scan her surroundings for any sign of family. In Mandarin, Qiuyue called for both Yingyue and Fengmian, then each of her siblings.. but there came no response. Frustrated, she began walking, deciding that they must have been somewhere nearby.

It had been another day for discovery; an activity that had quickly begun to occupy more and more of the dark male's schedule. With Empyrean entrenched upon the Nameless Mountain, he was not the only member of the pack who spent large swathes of their time scoping out the surrounding areas. Of particular curiosity to him, now that the snows had melted and passages to distant peaks had become easier to manage, were the other mountain ranges nearby. Mountain born, mountain raised, he craved the journeys that led him over new challenging terrain.

Lately, that was largely due to the fact that the challenge kept him thinking about the balance in his limbs and the sturdy rock beneath his feet, and not as preoccupied on the existential crisis that was waking up in an impossible dream world and not remembering where you came from, or maybe the fact that you'd died and this was some sort of... afterlife, maybe? But anyway, that was specifically what Element was not keen to think about today, hence the trek into the eastward peaks.

His curiosity had been of great reward today. While he wound a path through the jagged terrain, the crisp smell of glacial melt had reached his nose. Having grown thirsty from his hike, the cool water had an especially alluring appeal. There was another sort of thing dragging him in that direction though - the sound of falling water, roiling over the rocks before mingling with the water below. He couldn't place why it called to him, but he was enraptured by the siren song of the distant falls and couldn't tear his mind away from it.

Until, at least, he heard a strange voice speaking a tongue foreign to him. Black ears swiveled in the direction of the voice and he slowed to a halt, scanning the surrounding terrain to see if he could get a bead on who was nearby. Curious, but cautious (because more and more strangers appeared to be showing up these days, just as he had), Element let out a rumbling whuff to announce his presence.

Under different circumstances, Qiuyue might have mistaken this stranger for Fengmian, her father, or one of his relatives. However, primarily due to her high stress, she was more attentive to scent markers; unlike the Mandarin wolves, he did not carry the unmistakable scent of ash or salt which meant that he mustn’t have been from any of their clans.

So.. who was he?

Qiuyue carried her tail high enough above her back for its curious twitch to have been visible. He was conventionally attractive enough for her to think that, if he didn’t resemble almost every member of her known family, she might have tried to use one of her mother’s investigative tactics instead of making conversation.

It took her a moment to think of what to say. “Hear me?” Qiuyue asked, her words heavily accented, “Eh, missing.. lost.”

She appeared quickly after that, moving into his visual field with a tail raised high and curiosity emanating from the way she held herself. He did not recognize her by sight or by scent, he noted, as he sniffed cautiously in her direction. This was not strange, given how little he knew of the lands and how all his past interactions had gone. No scents were familiar ones, no faces were those intricately carved into his (admittedly very fragmented at the moment) memories.

He wasn't expecting her to be someone he knew, but there was still a split second of disappointment that rocked through him, there and gone like a breaking wave.

They seemed to eye each other in a moment of contemplative silence, and he was just opening his mouth to speak when she did so first. Her voice was a curiosity - strange to him, and novel. His ears quirked forward as he listened, needing an extra second of processing to decipher her words through her accent. "I, uh, hear you," he responded, pairing it with an affirmative nod and taking a cautious step towards her for another sniff, his interest now piqued. It seemed there was at least one bit of familiarity they could share, if he was understanding her correctly. Missing and lost. Another one to awaken. He felt a surge of empathy towards her, thinking back to how he had woken and the state he'd been in when Hydra had come across him. To this stranger's credit - she was remarkably more well composed than Ele had been. "Did you just wake up?" he asked quietly, slowing his words in the hopes she would be able to understand them better.

I’m going to wrap this because it’s taken me so long to respond. I’m sorry! :(

Qiuyue stared blankly in the stranger’s direction while she worked to decipher his response. He asked if she had just woken up, and for a moment, she thought to respond ‘yes’.. though some thought helped her to realize that it felt more like she might still be asleep. The dove opened her mouth to speak, closing it just as quickly with a shake of her head.

Regardless, this man obviously wasn’t Fengmian or either of Qiuyue’s brothers. She thought to ask if he had seen any of them or, better yet, if he’d seen Yingyue, but ultimately decided that it wasn’t worth the energy to ask someone about a job she could do herself. Qiuyue smiled then turned away, heading off into the haze of another direction.

He waited patiently for her response, having realized there seemed to be multiple factors at play here that would take her a little time to understand, and in turn for the two of them to understand each other. Between the foreign dialect that coated her words as they slipped across her tongue, and the sense that maybe she too had just awoken here, he did not expect her responses to be rapid. He just hoped that they could communicate enough that he'd be able to offer some form of comfort or guidance, or at least help point her in the right direction of someone who could. However, after a few seconds passed and her mouth opened slightly to form what he thought would be words - it then shut, and she shook her head silently. Element looked at her quizzically, trying to think of what to say next while he gave her the space to react. But she only smiled at him, and without ever speaking again she turned and departed.

He said nothing as she turned and walked away, although disappointment settled across him like a fine snow, his ears lowering as she eventually faded into the landscape. It felt like a missed opportunity - but beyond that, it left some feeling all to similar to failure rattling around inside his brain. After she had long passed out of sight, he let loose a quiet sigh and turned back to examine the glacial pond and the cerulean water within it. It was uncomfortable, how the interaction had managed to get under his skin and left him brooding in his own personal melancholy. But at least if one was to brood, the backdrop of splashing water, cries of birds, and the scent of fresh greenery poking through the soil was a good place to do so.
