Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

@Miriam taking place asfter this thread

^^
After joining up with @Guildenstern, the trio kept walking straight until they finally breached the end of the mist - there the trees still lingered as a major native to these lands, but the sun could now be felt on his back and nearly blinding his only good eye. Once adjusted to the new light and freedom of the nightmare-ish woods, here they would come up with what to do next.

The ground here was wet and tall grasses indicated some kind of marshland if he was not mistaken. Certain plants he remembered only thrived in wet terrain. The songs of blackbirds nearly immediately surrounded them, a welcomed sound in comparison to the choking silence of the previous woods.

Guildenstern was off doing whatever or listening in, it didn't matter to the fallen archangel. Turning his attention to the ashen woman, he signaled with a tilt of his head as if she didn't already realize where they were. “There, you are free from the mist.” It was as if he was holding his palms open to let an injured bird find its wings again, at least its how he felt it to be.

Meeting up with the brother she was generally quiet and polite, offering him a smile and a greeting as the two would discuss. Afterwards the trio simply went straight, and often would she sway from getting close to the two out of fright, to drifting further and more behind out of respect. It was a constant battle. The forest had given her a wariness, the silence that was given but the occasional unknown noise, and with each step that was taken was within uncertainty. She thought at times she could hear a growl, unknowingly so it was her stomach making that sounds; it simply spooked Miriam even more.

Finally breaching from the fog, they were created with another gloomy area, but it was still more welcoming to the sunless forest. Her paws felt the mud between her toes, the dampness that was in the air. Eyes looked around and taking quick glances at the streams and cattails that grew, finding it rather particular, but was soon brought back when the tundrian man spoke, "Ah," she stuttered for a moment, "thank you for guiding."

The sight of the cattails swaying in the breeze was something almost like a dream. They moved slowly as their heavy tops and spindly stems left little resistance for the wind. Blackbirds grasping their wood-like stalks to sing their harsh, and yet melodic tune, songs that he could barely believe were things he could hear again after awakening in such a desolate place as the mist.

The woman speaks, drawing his attention and noting the stutter in her tone. She was a beautiful little thing he had to admit, something beyond his understanding. Feminine by all graces now that he can see her clearer without the mist shrouding her curves and delicate facial features. Unfortunately, gentle was not in his nature - at least, it did not come naturally.

Birserkirs didn't need such things after all, so why would their newborn soldiers be taught how to treat a lady other than using her for breeding purposes? It was a belief he did not share with his father, but still, that didn't mean he automatically knew how to treat them properly. “Are you still afraid?” There was no softness in his tone or expression despite how he may want to sound concerned for her well being after they depart.

"I cannot lie on being a tad wary." The air was fresh and clean despite the murkiness she could see before her, though a tad humid. However most importantly she smelled none besides their own, marks of a claim were unfounded, and only then could she relax with but a wary smile, "I am not used to more.. Aggressive wolves that seem to be around." The incident of the unknown black wolf was definitely seared into her mind.

She never dealt with such aggression before despite how common it was within the wilds of the world - Miriam was simply lucky so far. It gave her a newfound worry upon travelling, for when the time came the other wasn't as lenient, could she come out in one piece? Was she able to defend herself? There was terrors she thought she knew, but only upon facing trouble, did she realize how worrisome it would be. Her mind was distracted on the distinct picture of such aggression, as her starlit white gaze glanced around, unknowing for any troubles that may lurk.

He focusses on her as they spoke. Ignoring the call of the birds or the wetness of the ground. Frankly, he thought she would run out the moment they found a mist-free area, that she would be the first to bolt away and never be seen again. The nervousness in her voice and stance, as she looked around with uncertainty, it brought up a different feeling within his gut. One he could not place a paw on just yet but it was oddly familiar too.

As she explained the reasoning for her anxious behavior, Rosencrantz had nothing to add about it for now. He simply stared in silence as his gears ticked on, trying to figure out the best course of action. He couldn't quite just dump her here and be off on his merry way with Guildenstern at his side. It didn't feel quite as easy of a task as it sounded. An annoyed flicker of his ear was all that signified life in him for the time being until finally his black-lined lips parted to speak.

“If it makes you more comfortable, you may travel with us until you find somewhere else more suitable for your taste.” Still, he believed it would be temporary at best - and soon enough, she would find some other group to feel safe in, leaving him and Guild on their own once more. Rosencrantz was pretty confident that Guildenstern would have little to no opinion on the matter provided that she didn't hinder them in any way.

"I wouldn't want to bother." There was comfort in the thought of other travelers coming with, especially as a sort of security as Miriam fully explored the land as she so desired so, but a part of her felt guilty, especially as assumed the man before her only saw her as an annoyance. She didn't like the thought of being a helpless wolf, despite the factor she relatively tends to be one. A guilty conscious constantly plagued the maidens mind as she thought so.

She shuffled her paws rather uncomfortably, or bit shyly. Especially as she wanted to accept, but teachings taught that while she should follow her heart, it was not at the cost of others, "Though I am not sure how to repay my debt to you."

“If you don't want to, you are free to go at any time.” Heartless? Yes. But also she had to make up her own mind on the matter. Would she accept her invitation or would she rather risk being on her own again? The latter seemed to make her beyond nervous, trembling like an autumn leaf in the wind as she desperately held onto her branch. He wouldn't beg or talk her into joining the now duo.

“I don't need repayment, I volunteered.” Although, should she offer something eventually he wouldn't deny it outright if it was something of use to him. Other than that, the paladin simply had no interest in anything else. He wasn't even certain there could be anything she could offer him that he or Guildenstern couldn't already obtain on their own.

"I was taught recently of the word 'nomad' as a lifestyle. There's not a particular place i'm looking for - are you alright with that?"  She wasn't sure if he would like the idea of her sticking around for long, but she also wasn't sure the day she would part if the offer was accepted. Eventually she imagined there would be a twist of interest, especially if they prefer to settle down eventually. Miriam did not desire to settle down for a pack anytime soon.

"I would like to join you two, otherwise, if that's fine." She continued to shuffle her paws, almost like someone who done wrong.

Nomad, he heard of the word before. It wasn't something common among wolves, mostly prey adopted such a lifestyle and maybe some predators would follow them along, but mostly, predators like themselves preferred to keep to a claim and guard their resources. Then again, he couldn't remember a time he had spent in a pack other than the one he and his brother were born into... and that was a time he wished not to remember much of. He was different than he was back then.

At least, he hoped he was.

A better man than the one who had grown up among barbarians. One who did not follow his father's footsteps so closely but chose his own path. But how far can an apple fall from the tree of which it came from? “Guildenstern and I have not spoken about settling down anywhere, we don't know of any local packs either - so I suppose we too are nomads until things change.” He was not set in his decision. He wasn't even certain how long Guildenstern would remain by his side either. They were not bonded and forced to remain at each other's sides after all.

"I know there are two near the mountains," however, Miriam actually didn't know it was one pack. She was thrown off by Hydra's unfriendliness compared to Bronco's, she thought the two surely must be from a different group, "though being quite unfamiliar, i'm unaware of most territories." She wouldn't be surprised to find more, but it was now at the back of her mind if they were friendly, which was the main concern.. She couldn't deny actually being scared, but there was now comfort she would be with two other wolves.

"Is there any place on particular you two are going?" As the maiden had no general location she needed to go, she was curious on what was their new destination. A slight tail wag fell from behind as she was interested, perhaps being a bit too excited over the thought of exploring somewhere new that wasn't so.. Hard to navigate and bleak.

He would take note of her mentioning two packs in the mountain, surely they were the ones she spoke of that were hostile toward her. Perhaps one day they would go and investigate such a claim and find out for themselves just how hostile this group may be or if it was just some sort of miscommunication of sorts.

“Not unless Guildenstern has a plan.” In other words, Rosencrantz himself had no idea where they were heading. They were moving and that was all that mattered. Trying to make sense of this new world and its inhabitants. Whether either of them would settle down somewhere was beyond his knowledge and not something he would linger on than a few brief passing thoughts.

All he knew is that for now, they were three; and one had to be kept a closer eye on than the other to make sure she didn't get into any more trouble than she already did.

"I think he wandered ahead." As Miriam was generally in her own world about worrying to be a burden, at some discussing with Rosencrantz on her companionship to the two,Guildenstern seemed to move further away, moving on. She only realized it when the white knight mentioned there was no plans unless his brother stated otherwise, and when was to look at him for guidance - he was ahead of him.

There was a slight awkward smile to her face, as the woman started to bound after them, most likely with the other behind as they moved to catch up to him. Without a particular place to, the trio was to wander.
