There was something about mountains Orlaith liked. Vague memories flooded her mind so, of being within the river, but her eyes often wandering to the high peaks above. She never knew why she adored so, maybe it was just the height of it all, feeling above others. Surprisingly so, as much as Orlaith yearned for high ranking, she didn't have much temptation to really be a leader. What she desired most is a rank that shows her dedication, and ability to make commands at will. Nothing annoyed her most when wolves would defy her so, especially when it involved the pack, her fur ruffled at the thought.

Though with not too many within their pack, there wasn't much of a need for a 'command,' especially as the cooling leader knew what to do. She gathered information and returned with more, and even moreso now a claim they have. She of course, stayed by and guarded so, marking as much as she could, and often driving away foxes. Though not too many wolves seem to enter so, Orlaith thought her marking worked.

Today was just another one of those days.

Wrangling two children through this unknown land was stressful, she found. She spent most of her time calling after her daughters — Siilgit more than Tsʼiwaangit, but neither were exempt — wrangling them close to her with cuffs and occasionally lifting them from the ground entirely when they became too unruly.

The mountains here she didn't recognize. Something strange had happened to her and her cubs while they hibernated,

She heard Siilgit let out a small noise of delight and call to her sister and mother. Tsʼiwaan, Mama, look! Mooksgmʼol did and felt a sharp sting of panic.

A wolf.

She cuffed Siilgit before the brown cub could run towards the canine with abandon. Siilgit giggled instead, even at her mother's stern look, too preoccupied with the odd-looking creature. Tsʼiwaangit held back, but she too stared at the wolf.

Back home most of the wolves remained on the coast, swimming between the islands with an ease that she was told was unbecoming of them. Here there were no such waters, so she reckoned that this was the benchmark that most wolves met. Most wolves would not attack a bear cub right in front of their mother unless they were mad, let alone a spirit bear, but Mooksgmʼol had no idea what beliefs these wolves (or even bears) had here. She could have lost her sacred protection, for all she knew.

Curious as to the lands around her, she decided, after calming Siilgit down, to speak with the agouti wolf. She wasn't sure what language to use — she would have used Łingít or X̱aad Kil if this was home, and this was a coastal wolf. She settled on English instead, and as she paused to take a breath, she hoped that the wolf didn't speak a language she was unfamiliar with.

“Hail.” she said haltingly. Her English was accented, as she spoke Smʼálgyax for most of her life. Say hello. she said to her daughters, who piped up dutifully in both their native tongue and in tiny echos of their mother's greeting. “I mean you no harm. I have questions.”

Upon first smelling the aroma of the beast, she was on an immediate guard. There was moments of memory flashes of various bear attacks, far too many that should've happened, and many scars that once been upon her pelt, now gone. Orlaith was no fool to jump head-first into such, and long ago, did she go without call. Her voice howled throughout the mountains, ringing a warning to @Ira, @Hieronymous, @Quicksilver, though urgent, and a warning to them, it was not a call for battle. Yet.

Orlaith held an obvious guard to the other, while a wary eye crossed to the cubs, "You are in wolf territory, bear." Her tone slight in threatening, but she did not cross to attack. Her stance though held hostility, head low with fur risen, and a tail swaying aggressively behind.

Ira was satisfied with the progress Vanderfell had made together. They were small, but that did not stop them from achieving their set goals or hinder their survival...so far. It had been a calm afternoon, one of which the mountain queen had decided to spend patrolling while she explored more of the twists and turns. All had been quiet and calm until a familiar howl echoed the peaks.

Orlaith.

Whatever cause for her call it sounded urgent, and Ira wasted no time turning to follow the summons. Luck would have it that she was not too far from her guard's location, though as she neared she could only silently hope the others were too. Two cubs and a mother stood just beyond the flame-licked woman, though surprisingly she did not attack despite having her kids in tow. The roan woman's brows furrowed as she stepped closer, her gaze drifting to Orlaith briefly before she spoke,

What is the meaning of this? She expected no response from the bear. It likely would not understand her, though its pause suggested it knew better than to let her cubs roam freely. Needless to say, she was curious.

Today, was a me day Hieronymous decided. A day for him to preen and take care of his body, check over for any wounds, bathe and rest up for tomorrow he would be back to his usual routine of wandering the mountain Ira decided to claim and familiarize himself with it. Sitting on his haunches, he chewed at his paw, gingerly trying to reach something between his pads. Scrunching up his nose against his toes as he continuously tried to reach whatever it was with his incisors - a thorn, a sizeable one at that, at least visible to his eye during grooming was stuck between his toes.

He—

Just—

Couldn't reach it. And just as he could have sworn he had reached it, an urgent call rang out in the woods beckoning all members of Vanderfell to them - it wasn't Ira and so someone else was in need of assistance. There was no time to think twice, he was quick to leap into action despite his original plans for today, and he would deal with the literal thorn in his foot after whatever this was. He ran down to where he was posted, making haste as he nearly flew across the rocky terrain toward where the call originated, and only slowed at the strange, and almost dangerous sight.

A bear and her cubs were face to face with Ira and Orlaith who were already here, he assumed Orlaith was the one who had called them since he would have recognized Ira's call to action. The lack of demand to attack on sight and how on edge, but not hostile everyone looked - the panted knight approached with a certain casual strut to him. Hoping whatever tension would melt away with his smile and pleasant dip of the head in greeting to the mother bear and her two children.

“What do we have here? A few guests?” Despite how casual and relaxed he was, Hiero was aware how dangerous mother bears could be... he could only hope his more passive approach would diffuse the situation at hand.

Mooksgm’ol tensed, knowing what howls were for wolves — calls, in this case for aid. Siilgit and Ts’iwaangit mimicked the call, oblivious to the danger that the wolf was now posing to them. They were newborns to the world, their first outings being only a few days before. “No harm. Just talk. I have questions.” She said, her voice notably on edge as she leaned over her daughters.

One wolf soon became three, and her children grew with excitement rather than fear. She was not quick to anger, but the threat to her children unlocked a part of her that was previously unknown. Mooksgm’ol's nostrils flared impetuously, squinting at the new arrivals. The last one — male — was the most reasonable towards her, she thought. She knew wolves were all about hierarchy, especially if they were not related, but had no idea which was the leader here. She looked to the second wolf to arrive, another female like the first. “I do not recognize this place. I woke up here from Long Sleep. I want to ask about here.”
Then, she turned her head to the first wolf. “We leave as soon as possible. I just curious. Want to know what this place is.” Her daughters did not know English yet. Ts’iwaangit looked up at her curiously as she spoke. Siilgit was too interested in the wolves that had arrived, her mother's paw the only thing stopping her from tottering towards the canines.

"A bear that speak our tongue. She shows no hostility yet." She was definitely wary over them, despite the mother persisting that she meant no harm. The fued between their species was always high, Orlaith would be a fool to simply trust what she said, especially when the mother seemed to be getting restless. Though, she may be in a way a wild one, the guard didn't think she was barbaric to immediately attack, especially when the other was asking simple questions. In general she wanted to snap and chase the other out- it would be that simple if they were a wolf. It was a bear they were talking to, a more cautious approach was needed, and with more to their numbers now, she felt more calm.

Orlaith sideglanced to Hiero, but then focused her forested gaze back to Ira, awaiting for what she would say, especially after the bear continued to speak. The Alpha seemed generally peaceful on occasions, but it had been some time since the two saw each other since separation, and the memories she held together with the other was general groggy.. The current personality was hard to appropriately grasp, it was better to wait and listen.

It wouldn't take long for Hieronymous to join their side as well. She knew not where Quicksilver was nor if he was on his way, but they would have to handle the situation themselves. If they were lucky, perhaps both sides could go in peace...

Ira found the bear's mannerisms strange. Most mothers would never resort to speaking, actually, she never heard one speak, only grunt and roar as they either choose to charge or flee. Perhaps that was just another trick of these lands...The roan queen glanced down to the cubs at her feet, one a little too eager for her mother's liking. You wander in my mountains. The words were said with a drawl, emphasis left on her claim. She still wasn't sure how she felt speaking with beasts, but if it meant they left on their own accord, perhaps even learned where to avoid... the word could be spread and perhaps save them some trouble down the line.

This range and the forest below are under Vanderfell's watch. As for what lays beyond, I can not say. This bear spoke of long sleep... rather that was hibernation or something more she could not be certain, but it did make her curious. Did you not fall asleep here? The pattern fell in line with those she had met, but Ira had assumed the other creatures that walked these lands were native.

Late to the party, Quicksilver came running onto the scene as swiftly as he could. He'd come from a hunt that Orlaith's warning had disturbed; he watched uselessly the snowshoe hares scattered at the echo of a predator's call, and turned at once toward the summons. Having missed the arrival of his pack-mates and the sharing of their concerns, the silverwhite noted only the pungent stench of another animal as he moved to ease himself among the group.

It was as he stepped alongside Hieronymous that he saw the problem, and the memory of another lifetime flashed before his eyes -

Alone in the hollow and whimpering softly to himself, deeply concerned to have woken to no parents or siblings. He recalled being too small to be on his own, but too afraid to go looking for his caregivers. There had been an indescribable tension in the air and one parent had failed to return that day, but it was that scents his remaining family wore that troubled him most: blood and danger.

Quicksilver had never seen a bear, not that he could remember anyway, but to look upon it how had triggered some anxiety that'd festered in him since puphood. Ears splayed backward and eyes wide with terror, he could do nothing but stare at the beast before them like a deer in the headlight.

Though friendly as possible. Hieronymous was no moron. He knew the danger bears posed to wolves, but the feeling must be mutual he thought. She was a single mother with two new cubs, one wolf after another arriving after being called for when all she wanted was to talk - at least, from the sound of it. Of course, she would shift uncomfortably, worried for her own safety and that of her children. He sympathized with her confusion, as should they all from the sound of the similar stories being shared among them.

He would remain calm, however, still keeping a light smile on his face and as welcoming as ever - still trying to diffuse the situation and let them all talk and answer questions peacefully. More so now with Quicksilver arriving, four wolves against one mother bear - that couldn't feel good for her.

“I too woke up in an unfamiliar place, in the plains near a lake I never saw before until then.” He tried to reach out to her, to let her know that she wasn't alone in her confusion. Ira answered her questions while Hiero would try to reach an understanding, his posture was aloof and rather relaxed, he often glanced at the children to offer a wide smile. “So far none of this seems familiar except for maybe a few faces.” He assumed that's what she meant. Her story was far too familiar to think she was just lost on the mountains as opposed to waking up in a strange land she had never seen before.

It was easier for him to act relaxed in this situation, with a small pack by his side it was comforting... what made him nervous was the bear's level of comfort. So far she was non-aggressive, but should she feel threatened, that would be a different story. “What are their names?” After a pause he asked, hoping to show he wanted to familiarize himself with them, perhaps treat them as new friends as opposed to some kind of monster or new enemy after what must be such a confusing and frightening wake up.

“Not unless you threaten. she huffed, annoyed that she was being spoken about while not being spoken to. It was fine if it was her elders who were doing so (they did that all the time, knew that they could, and relished the power some of them), but these wolves were not her elders. They were equals, in her mind.

She listened to the second wolf speak. “You are pack leader, then?” Wolves were complicated and these were without ceremony; no introductions or names. “I was born and raised in a forest on the coast. Lived there my whole life. My den for the Long Sleep was near a waterfall. We did not wake there. In those mountains —” She gestured with one paw to the west and the mountains there. “ we woke.” She was not the only one to wake here. That...disturbed her. She had not heard of such a thing before. “I've met no one from home.” She sighed. Bears were solitary by nature, but things were different on the coastal forest, for her. She knew many bears, many animals' names, and they hers. If she was home instead, she would have introduced her cubs to them all. It was strange for her to be so isolated.

A fourth wolf arrived, eyes wide with terror. Mooksgm’ol ignored them, instead responding to the third wolf, the male. “Siilgit,” the girl perked up at her name, looking up at her mother expectantly. “Ts’iwaangit.” The reddish bear cub huffed in response, still pressed against her mother's frame. “I am Mooksgm’ol.”

Orlaith still held her tail relatively tall with a risen fur, feeling a bit threatened by this bear. Though, she knew to step back, an eye to Ira to watch the interactions. She also found it quite particular as the splotchy man was so friendly with their predatoral enemy, that it definitely gave a brow raise. Though nothing was more strange then this situation, for a bear speaking their language itself was a mystery altogether.

Some part of her couldn't deny the cubs were a bit cute, but she had to remind herself they would grow into wolf-killers. Having nothing to offer to the convo altogether, only a hum was produced as green eyes were watching the cubs. Orlaith wasn't aware of her focus upon them.

Not long after her thought did the silver man arrive, seemingly surprised or intimidated by their...visitors. He had good reason to be on edge, surely they all were aside from maybe Hieronymous, but as things stood they outnumbered her and her children were mere cubs. I assure you, our goals are similar. Our kind are not wont to peace between creatures. Her gaze dipped to the cubs, one still eagerly retained by her mother's paw. But that does not mean we might not rewrite our course.

The golds of her eyes blinked back to Mooksgm'ol at her assumption, a simple nod given with her response, That I am. And I wish nothing more than my peoples' safety. Her questions were answered swiftly and in response, Hieronymous was quick to chime in. His approach had been softer than her own despite the faces that stood before them, something she wasn't sure she entirely agreed with though the response of the bears seemed fruitful.

The Queen pondered her options, weighing the outcomes carefully before raising her voice again, I go by Ira, High Queen of Vanderfell Woods. We shall answer any remaining questions under the condition that you shall not hunt on our grounds. You are to leave after receiving the answers you seek and any of your kith or kin you meet you shall pass word to avoid these lands. She knew there was no way to control these...awakenings. It was not the mother's fault she arrived here suddenly, but she could prevent others from blindly wandering. She may be forgiving this time, but there was no guarantee she might be on a second offense.

Do you agree to these terms?

His gaze, glazed over, did not waver. It remained locked on the form of the mother bear as her lips moved, but he heard no sound. He simply stared with wide-eyed fear at this fleeting memory of a past he'd failed to recall, one he was both curious to explore but afraid of the likely trauma it would unearth.

He cold not recall the face of a parent who'd failed to return home that day, but the crippling loneliness and emptiness that'd followed felt so vivid to him as he stood there on limbs that he thought might give way beneath him at any moment. Quicksilver - or whatever he'd been called back then - had been too young to understand the how and the why, and now as an adult he struggled more so with those questions. Emotion burned behind his pale stare as he willed himself back to reality and, blinking, he glanced across to Ira as she introduced herself and firmly insisted that distance be placed between the beast and her spires when she received the answers she sought.

He side-stepped closer to the nearest companion - @Hieronymous - hopeful that his proximity might ease his fraying nerves.

The way Orlaith was going on about handling the so far passive bear made his nerves spark like lightning. Nervously watching the two as the ursine was quick to correct the situation back in her favor about not being threatened. He wanted to step in and guarantee that he would not allow any harm on her nor her cubs, but the problem was that they were on pack lands now... and he didn't know them very well at this moment either.

Even Quicksilver found himself right next to the piebald-like male, and Hieronymous couldn't help but offer a light smile toward the silver man's direction in hopes of calming his own nerves. It seemed that no matter what he was doing to try and soothe any nerves was being relatively brushed off other than the mother bear answering his question about their names. Well, that was a step in the right direction he supposed. With names shared all around, they were more as "living beings" rather than just "that bear" or "the wolf". Now they were Mooksgm’ol and Ira.

Ira gave her terms to the bear and his eyes rose up to Mooksgm'ol's. “I can offer to guide them if both Mooksgm'ol and Ira will allow?” He glanced between the mother bear and Ira. “To keep an eye on them as well as ensure their safe travels through Vanderfell?” A soft sway of his tail was offered as a friendly gesture to add to his suggestion.

The gray woman introduced herself as High Queen of this land. The ridiculousness of these wolves; Queen, of all titles? And hunt? She almost wanted to laugh. She barely hunted anything except fish, and that wasn't until the salmon runs of autumn. No, now in spring she searched for berries and sprigs and still-sleeping grubs. But she nodded regardless; the terms were fair, for she had no interest in rubbing shoulders with wolves as her cubs grew. “I agree,” the words felt more binding in her native tongue than in common, even if the translation was lost on them.

Mooksgm’ol sat down then, her rear legs sprawled out in front of her. She was exhausted. Waking up from hibernation in this strange land with two cubs to monitor...she hadn't let it hit her until now. Ts’iwaangit pushed against her, letting out a little purring noise as she did so — she was a sweet thing, young as she was. Siilgit stepped forward towards the wolves now that she had sensed her mother's — and the wolves — calmness. The brown cub was still wary, holding back her excitement with quick looks over her shoulder towards her mother as she made little steps forward towards Orlaith. Mooksgm’ol let out a warning chuff, and Siilgit slunk away before wandering over to Ira, repeating the same pattern.

She looked towards the split, almost painted male — she had liked him so far; he had been nothing but polite this entire time. “Yes.” she nodded again. “I would like that.” She looked towards the High Queen, pondering for a moment before she spoke. “So then, Queen Ira. How many wolves live here? Packs.” she said the word hesitantly, unsure of her pronunciation. “And where they are? So we do not encounter them.” She glanced at the nervous gray wolf that had arrived late. “Are there other bears?” Bears were familiar to her, and yet a threat. But she was more comfortable with bears than she was with wolves.

permission to skip orlaith. old thread so old knowledge from ira

The tongue she spoke was unfamiliar, though from the way she seemed to relax she could only assume they had come to an agreement. Ira gave an appreciative nod to Hieronymous, even if it was a gesture of kindness she would be happy to have one of her own confirm when the mother and cubs had left their bounds. I know not how many traverse this land, but I know of one larger to the south. Their numbers seemed strong and the Queen there claims a short mountain range. Ira was sure if this mother was not happy here, Empyrean would be the last place she wanted to wander with cubs in tow.

Aside from them, we have only met the lone traveler. This mountain has brought us peace and seclusion. You are the first of your kind we have met. And judging by the size of her growing kids, they would not be the only ones. Not forever at least. For now, they were harmless, Ira could only hope they remained so. With a deal in place, the two were now free to roam, something the High Queen held little concern over.

They would not run off, not with their mother here. Based on the one's curiosity she would even wager a guess that they were the first wolves her kids had met. She would not mind the girl's curiosity, no matter how her own kin might view her species, this was a child. She had done no wrong in her life by simply existing, even if there was tension. If she wished to be curious it was best done now before she was grown and another pack killed her for it.

Plz feel free to skip QS, he quiet and scared.

Silent, and very obviously anxious, Quicksilver simply hovered at Hieronymous' flank. Still his pale eyes lingered on the mother bear, muscles tightened by his fear that any movement on his part may provoke an attack.

It surprised him to see the youngsters find the confidence to venture forward, closer, and the silverwhite emitted the breath of a whine. From between his lips, his salmon-pink tongue snaked out to lap nervously at his jowls; his limbs began to shake a little as the thought of Mooksgm'ol turning on him should he not step aside to give space to her cub.

Ira could be disappointed in his lack of confidence, he knew, but the muddied memories that came with testing bear-scent had threatened to bring him yo his knees. Quicksilver continued to simply stand there, confused and ashamed, and void of words as he struggled to hold it together.

I didn't realize we were skipping Orlaith so I'm sorry I didn't realize it was my turn 。゜(`Д´)゜。

^^
As the mother and Ira offered their approval for his offer to escort them, the painted man had little else to add to the conversation other than listening quietly as Ira would share her knowledge with the ursine. He could feel how tense Quicksilver was by his rear, the anxious energy just spilling out from the pastel man and Hiero could only hope his more relaxed nature helped ease any tension felt elsewhere.

All that was left for him to do here was hang out, remain relaxed, and escort the mother with her children when it was time for them to move on. He took note of Ira speaking of the mountain wolves, assuming it was the ones that Bronco was a part of, the ones she visited after they had crossed paths the first time. So their numbers were strong huh? Well, it was luckily for him that Bronco found him and not one of their many, possibly more aggressive followers.

There were wolves south of here. That they lived on the mountains was good to know — at this time of year she would not be in the mountains, but by winter she would. She wondered how long they would stay, how long the threat would last. It would probably expand, then, if more creatures appear as she did. The fact that they were larger worried her. She grunted in assent. “I met a larger bear — mediik...uh, brown, hump on the back, larger than me.” She doesn't know the word in the common tongue, but the description alone was sure to be familiar. Grizzly. Much more dangerous than a black bear such as she. “He was west of here.”

Siilgit had continued to wander as the adults spoke. Mooksgm’ol's eyes shifted back and forth between the Queen and her child, her tired eyes straining. Siilgit shuffled towards the pale one, her eyes shining. Why are you scared? She spoke in their tongue, having no knowledge of Common just yet. Mooksgm’ol huffed in warning once more, her tone stricter. “Get away from him, na'ax,” she warned. Siilgit opened her mouth to protest, but Mooksgm’ol huffed again. She rose to her feet and Ts’iwaangit slid from her. “It is time for us to go, I think.” Siilgit was too excited, too overstimulated to keep still as she talked. They needed to go before she came into trouble.

The whole situation was odd, and anyone treating it normal, was a loon. She often switched between gazing at Ira, who talked to the bear nonchalantly, and to the one who spoke wolf-tongue. It somewhat brought a dreading feeling if anything else - particularly like prey, if they spoke to Orlaith, she most likely wouldn't be as feisty within her hunts. The thought of them openly screaming no was unnerving, and was rather internally thankful that many did not speak the same tongue.

She hoped to not meet one again.

And was rather glad for their departure, where her tail wagged just a bit. A talking bear just did not seem right to the warriors mind, especially if the thought the other could turn at any moment. She of all wolves, did not trust bears. While many instances seemed like a lost memory, her dislike, their claws, were still clung closely, feeling the erratic heartbeat just from looking at the other. Orlaith was ready to remove them at any point the High Queen decided to - but she never did call for that charge, and so Orlaith stood by rather impatiently, in silence - surprisingly so.

So she had met another already. One much larger with a hump along his back. Grizzly. Her jaw only tightened slightly at the news, but with any luck, he would never wander past their borders. West meant traveling up one mountain, perhaps even two depending on how far he was, but that also did not stop this one and her cubs.

One of the young ones had made its way to Quicksilver now. The pale man was practically melded to Hieronymous's side as it grumbled something in its own language. Perhaps it was time for them to go. They both had been too new to offer any more that might be useful to each other. Beyond that would beg for trouble should a mother lose her temper.

With a nod, the roan woman turned to Hiero, In that case, Hieronymous will escort you as promised. No harm will come to you or your children. If you see that bear again, do warn of the packs. No side needs bloodshed in confusing times. She would wait for the group to turn to leave, the others were given a gesture with her head that they too might go if they wished, but only once the family unit was on her way would she depart herself.

permission to skip Hieronymous granted

As the conversation drew to a close, she was hit by a sudden realization: she needed to feed soon — far from this pack's territory, as promised. The exhaustion of wrangling two cubs, traveling, and coming across a semi-hostile pack of wolves was draining every reserve she had left. She wanted to sleep as well, though that could wait until she and her cubs had fed. She was relieved that their dialogue was over. She enjoyed talking, even if the company was tense, but having to think of her cubs and her current state at the same time...well, that added an extra layer of difficulty. “I thank you,” she nodded to the High Queen, hoping that her gratefulness seeped past her oncoming exhaustion. Siilgit had trotted back to her side, greeting her sister with a playful swat. She looked towards the gray male, Hieronymous, grunting quietly to confirm her readiness. What a strange place she had ended up in, but she was nothing if not adaptable.
