Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

As the dusk hit, Ara surveyed around the mountain. She observed the night where many were active, such as the owls that hooted in the sky and darted before the tree-tops, and the certain raccoons that came out for foraging. The moths were fluttering within the moonlight, the amount dying off as winter was just ahead, and would be the first they truly remembered.

The trees were changed and were growing bare. Once a yellow, to orange and some to a deepened red that was like of blood itself, but slowly they fell from the trees and made piles. Her ears flickered as she heard the crunching of the leaves, watching the rats run across the pile and disappeared into the waking night. Golden eyes continued watching in a suspicion, knowing as well not only do prey swim through the darkness, but a few wolves prefer the prowling of so.. Was any attempting to run nearby?

She observed and walked through, not particularly within any direction, but didn't leave too far from home. In the backdrop the mountain hung, but did not cover the sky itself. Before the north the full moon rose high in the sky, giving the grace of light alongside of the stars. The little light that it granted was enough, as eyes were adjusting to the nocturnal delight through the traversing. Smells filtered through Ara's nose, but none that simply stood out, just of the occasional fauna that roamed, and the stale remained of passing wolves.. None seemed particularly too fresh.

Finally finished with the Tundra, Obelisk moved southwards, following the scent trails that led to food, camps, and hundreds of goddamn wolves. Perhaps friends, perhaps enemies, perhaps loyal followers, and perhaps relatives of the Mysterious and Mystical Alya. This young stranger he came across seemed to be just that, and Obelisk gave a small wuff of greeting.

He wondered if, perhaps, he could pass on a small message through her. Just to let Alya know that . . . He was around. But he didn't want to look pathetic, either, so for now he'd entertain himself with whomever this little girl was, whether she was one with the Sovereign Princess or not. “What is someone like you doing on such a fine night like this?” He purred as he drew closer, exiting from the shadows as his tail slowly swayed.

“Pray tell . . .”

She continued pressing on, passing by a tree that had caught her fancy. Claws marks were upon it, she narrowed a gaze as it did not appear to be a wolven, and as Ara had never seen a feline.. It didn't look of so either. She knew of bear markings, but when she scented the ground there was none fresh. Even a raised look gathered nothing about — was it an old territory? Overgrown within moss, the tree was carved but the weather moved on. She would look at some more before moving forward, a careful golden view to the remaining trees if there was more markings, or but a fluke.

However her tracks were stopped, a man approached and greeted so. Silky-smooth in tone with a smile of a devilish delight, it had her look at him with a neutrality, but there was an air of caution within her mind. He was black as the night, similar to her own but eyes were ablazed. She would think he was a copy of another man within the Ripperwoods, but lacked the silver lining onto his coat.

"Travelling," Ara said plainly.

"Travelling," A boring reply, sure, but something that Obelisk could certainly work with. For now, he'd stray from asking about a similar looking ebony-pelted lady, instead making small-talk. He could do this, and it would offer some sort of entertainment in his day, right? That'd be nice. “So am I,” He said, instead of saying "same." For two reasons; 1) he wasn't boring, and 2) his author needed to get those words in for nano, afterall!

“I'm Obelisk –” He begun;

“– It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs . . . ?” Obelisk dipped his head in a bow, bringing a paw forwards so he could lower himself downwards, smiling devilishly as his the words that rolled off his tongue oozed. Perhaps it wasn't smart to continue assuming people's titles, but hey, it was one of his tricks! 50/50, right?

"Kanmuri." She looked past him to the setting sun that would divulge them to darkness. She casted another gaze around, complete stillness following the few occasional sounds of nearby prey. Nothing that was deemed canid or something even larger like a bear, as so the trees indicated. However that also stated that they were a loner; but Ara didn't trust him. His sickly tone reminded her of the other man in the Ripperwoods, an unsettling feeling that led to the name the Matriarch gave to their young in a way to hide such identity. She felt it was the easiest to use, and perhaps the first time feeling uncomfortable enough to use.

Ara did not think she would see this man again.

"You live elsewhere?" or was he a true loner?

Her answers were scarce, protective, and thorny, as if she had something to hide. Obelisk quirked a brow, watching the woman's muzzle move as she answered her title; "Kanmuri." It was pleasant enough, though something about her tone made the ebony man believe that there was a chance she could be covering something up. No, no, the man cleared those thoughts away. She seemed to be thinking, though, until questioning him.

"You live elsewhere?" The man gave a brief nod, followed by a small wolfish shrug of his shoulders. He didn't really live anywhere, to be honest, but the mountains were looking quite nice so far. Perhaps he could take a good look around, and find somewhere to den; or perhaps find a pack to take respite within. “I don't live anywhere in particular,” He danced around the truth; I'm looking for a claim. He didn't want this lady to grow defensive, or anything, because that would make her much more difficult to talk to.

“I'm currently touring, trying to get a good look at this new world I've been summoned in, you know?” Perhaps she could relate. Maybe Kanmuri had awoken, too, or perhaps she'd been born here; was this her native land, or had she been summoned in this . . . odd place?

"Are you interested in joining packs?" She hummed lightly in thought ; as she was unaware he wanted to claim something, maybe she could drag such an individual to Empyrean. A few times Ara tried to extend a paw of invitation, or try to inquire whether they wished to or not. The more that claimed to Empyrean's might, the easier it was to stomp out any flames that either went against, or claimed a bit too closely to her liking. Empyrean was mostly full of warriors and the like, she couldn't even think of one named as a true medic.. But the more warriors, the more liked.

Ara would be more then willingly to reveal more if it meant luring someone to join.

"Are you interested in joining packs?" Hm, was he? While he did like the safety and numbers to surround him – credit to @Edelweiss – he certainly liked not being bound to any particular land. Was he but a pawn in Kanmuri's eyes? A recruit among the rest? He hummed. “Not particularly,” He purred.

“Though I doubt I'm immune to a little bit of persuading . . .”

She hummed lightly ; this was a test of sorts. Ara was still young, she was also rather dull at conversation when it came through especially persuasion, so she wasn't sure how to go about it. It almost felt like a trap of sorts that he was just toying with her as others attempted to do, "packs bring security, what would be the reason for you not to join one?" she so asked firstly. She might as well find out his reasons against joining a pack and perhaps using that to twist around to join Empyrean itself. It was a rather free-reign and simplized one, realizing that many packs held different ways and striction.. But there wasn't too much ; be loyal to it, be respectful, and don't cause trouble.

She held similar reasoning to Edelweiss, simply, and Obelisk flicked his tail as he listening. She truly didn't have much to say, did she? Not much of a talker. Obelisk quirked a brow; where would anyone be able to get with limited vocabulary? It truly bored him. "packs bring security, what would be the reason for you not to join one?" It was a good argument, sure, but it wasn't all that effective against both a nomad, and a man who'd already had this debate before.

“I am not one to enjoy being bound to a specific land,” He stated matter-of-factly. “Or a specific region, for that matter.” He enjoyed his freedom; you want Obelisk, you're gonna get all the add-ons, which includes his immense stubbornness, and his slowly worsening ego. Obelisk tilted his head, hollow sun-fire eyes staring into the dam's soul. His eyes bore into her pelt, a sort of bloodlust following his gaze; spooky.

Her tail flickered as did her ear, "I don't think anything I can say would make you want to join a pack," so Ara concluded. If he did not like being bound to a singular region, a pack life was not one to take. Though exploration and scouting that there was, she imagined no one would want a wandering packmate who used the area as they so pleased. As much as she would want to lure another, there was though of no point to bring a man whose thought of leisure and adventure was set.

Ara enjoyed being with her family and pack, it was all she knew. But it couldn't be denied there was some part of curiosity to see what was beyond. She remembered @Elke speaking of a land of endless sand.. The dark daredevil wanted to see whether that was true, or her childish way of calling the other a liar, was true. She was also very curious of the sea and the beach, ever since the shark by literally, dropped onto their land. There was a quite a lot to see, but the Ostrega could not see herself leaving so freely, and would return soon.. Much less her mother letting her out without a guardian. She knew it'd be stiffling if someone had to tag alone.. Unless, it was her siblings.

That was a thought for another day.

"I will be leaving now."

And she was leaving.

Hm, he’d truly wanted to toy with her; to batt around ideas and see if she’d be stubborn enough to try and push the values of pack-life against an immovable object. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and she surrendered quite easily. Obelisk mentally sighed. What a bore, so far the expedition into the tundra had seemed a lot more entertaining than the journey south, through the mountains.

“Ah, well, pleasure to make your acquaintance, Kanmuri,” Obelisk offered, dipping his fedora head in her direction as a non-verbal ‘goodbye’ as he took a step back. “Say hello to dear Alya for me, will you?” And without waiting for a reply, he’d give her a smug smile before he too, left, turning and aiming back up north. Perhaps he owed Edelweiss another visit; she’d been quite more entertaining than . . . whatever this had been. Sigh, what a shame . . .
