Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Lúthien, having hunted herself a plump vole from the forest floor that evening, perched herself high among the tree branches to consume her prey. When she was done feasting, the owl set about picking at her talons. She pulled at tufts of bloodied fur from her claws and swiped them from her sharp beak onto the rugged tree bark. When she was satisfied that everything was appropriately cleaned, she arched her neck to briefly survey the ground below before swooping beneath the branches to settle atop a large rugged pile of old stone - remnants of a building that had crumbled long ago.

She could see through an opening in the canopy from there, and between the clouds a navy sky twinkled with starlight. Lúthien could make out a constellation or two from where she'd come to rest, and emitted a soft hoot that echoed into the night.

As does her nocturnal counterpart, appearing only by dusk and not dawn, Arius had slithered from the pack's cavernous hall and perched herself within a door frame. Looking out into the darkness, and pondered her scheme for the night.

Above, in stark contrast to its screen behind, a white ghost flapped its wings through the eaves and branches adorning the forest. And the celestial nymph watched them. Curious, but not fascinated by their display. Even when they landed not far upon a stock of the ruin's crumbling remains, she simply watched.

It did not take long for the sight to grow stale and she moved off from the doorway, and slowly moved away, possibly disturbing the predator of the night sky.

She was pretty, the raven wolfess who lurked within the forest. Beneath pale moonlight, Lúthien could see how her sleek furs were kissed by fine golden shades. Raising her large eyes, the owl's gaze briefly met the cobalt of her companion's; she tilted her heart-shaped face, curious. They were a fascinating species, though it seemed the interest was not mutual.

Lúthien watched quietly as the she-wolf turned away. She did not move from her perch, not immediately, though as the stranger's dark figure moved smoothly between the rugged trees she took flight once more. A silent huntress, Lúthien swooped ahead and took hold of a bare branch, shifting herself to study the canine's movements again.

Slipping through into the shrouded trees that were all becoming more luminescent with their vibrant autumnal hues, even during the dimly lit nights, she thought the owl would tend to its own business for the night, but instead, it swooped up ahead - a haunting figure with elegant long wings.

Arius looked them in the eye for a moment, wondering what this was, but slightly charmed by the creature's antics, she then trot persuasively in a different direction. Testing them, if they were looking to stalk her. Or was it just a mere coincidence they flew up ahead?

Their gazes met, albeit briefly, but Lúthien was thrilled to have been noticed. Endlessly curious of these land-dwelling creatures, she slowly blinked her wide, dark eyes toward the gold-kissed wolfess. While other birds may avoid being detected by such carnivores, she was always satisfied to capture their attention - even if they openly entertained the idea of consuming her flesh.

She was content with the assumption that they'd never capture her.

Lúthien watched as her study chose, suddenly, to change direction. The she-wolf veered away and through the foliage, opting for a new route - perhaps to avoid the owl's watch. She exhaled heavily, concerned suddenly that she might be testing the stranger's patience with her pursuit, so did not continue. The owl emitted a low hoot and took off, soaring silently beneath the canopy in search of another source of entertainment for the night.
