Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Vendrussel was humming lightly as she held a poppy-flower. She vaguely knew of the medical properties, but it wasn't what she was gathering it for. On the day of today, was using it by a nearby cliff. The cliff wasn't super high, but it was still a dive down to the waters. She could see the fish swarming, barely touching the surface and some being a rather larger size. The mighty one's often are around this side..

She just needed to trick them to the surface. So, the dragoness gathered some seeds, sprinkling it over the water so that they'd nibble at the surface. She could see the water ripple, meaning it was working.. Just as she thought to dive forth, Vendrussel looked behind her to see a familiar face, "Hey @Vedette, want to join the dive?"

Vedette had been out on a patrol, her ears tilted upwards into the wind and her nose worked up in a wrinkle as she sniffed lightly into the air every so often. Sometimes she sat like a gargoyle on one of the closest rocks towards the shoreline and on other days she found herself marching around the Brim, making sure that no one was slipping through the cracks. The dusk dragon hadn't expected to find Vendrussel fishing on some of the outskirts.

She was going to leave the commander about her business, letting her enjoy her time alone, but instead, Ven called her over, and the dusk dragon obliged. "Sure. Though I might not be the best help. I've never... fished before." She was still getting used to the complete process of swimming. Fishing seemed like a step above that. Even so, the woman found herself climbing down to where Ven was at, and joining her side.

"We all start somewhere," she said as her tail swayed lightly with a small grin. Diving was a bit more intimidating, but it felt like it was something up her game. She was a woman of the military, someone strong ; she wouldn't think she would skirt past it that easy. Although she would also hope, that the other wanted it ; and wasn't simply following orders of another, as she diligently has done so. Vendrussel appreciated her ; but hoped greatly she would enjoy herself as not only a warrior, but as but kin in the ford.

"Keep your eyes closed before the impact. Dive where you see the fish chipping at the seeds." If she were human, perhaps she'd give a peace sign before rushing over the edge. Not even giving time for another responds from her ; the Dragoness was off.

Vedette heeded the sea wolf's words, ears tilting to each one, being taught an important lesson in the art of fishing. Before the tan warrior could ask the leader anything else about fishing, she was off, jumping off the edge and diving into the waters below. A hefty sigh came from the warrior as she glanced over the edge. There were many reasons Vedette liked Vendrussel, and this was one of them. She was fearless and adventurous all in the same step. The sentry could never be like that. She was always too tense or too deep in following orders. It was hard for her to see past the wall that she'd built around herself. She'd never really known anything else other than seriousness. She'd never been allowed to be a kid and therefore, had no clue how to let go. But Ven was teaching her one step at a time.

There were ripples in the water below and Ven's words resonated in her mind. Taking a few steps back, she took a breath, and ran to the edge, then jumped. It reminded her a lot of when she first took the dive to enter the Ford, how she fell and felt weightless, and felt emotion for the first time in... eons. This time, she only waited for the impact of the water and with her eyes and maw closed. As soon as the impact happened, her autumn-esqe eyes searched the salt water, ignoring the sting it brought, and snapping her maw when fish got close.

As she landed in the water, fresh by the coolness, she could feel the impact of the fish swimming to get away. Her jaws snapping, an inhaling of water that was thrown out as she continued on and on. Her tongue swished, feeling the taint of it's scales along her maw as just barely, she had gotten the tail-end of one. A fight, a wrestle, her head moved forward to by literally lunging the fish to the surface as a quick throw about, while gathering herself in this weightless word. Paws swimming precisely and with force, there was no ground to see or touch and they had to solely rely on swimming.

She caught it, a swift bite to end it all ; just getting it was the effort, the kill was always an easier part.. Sometimes, but now faired if her counterpart was also doing well. She knew the woman dived after her, but she wasn't sure how far behind she was, and if the fish had already swam from her reach.

Cool scales cut against her face as the fish thrashes, larger than she expected. The wolf's eyes burned underneath the water, held open to see what she was doing. Blood spilled from the fish as her teeth ran jagged into it, snapping the tail from the body and recovering what was left before breaching the water with the dangling body in her mouth. There was so much of the sea she hadn't explored — only getting in when necessary to travel to the mainland. Each swim she felt as if she found more and more of it to uncover. Opening her eyes beneath the water had shown how much she truly missed by never swimming.

Her autumn gaze searched for Ven and found her not far off. The soldier chuffed against the food in her mouth before giving a few powerful kicks, treading water over to her. "How long do you usually do this? Is there an amount you try to catch before returning?" It seemed like an excellent exercise. She knew her legs would be sore tomorrow, still adapting to the motions and muscles that it took to swim. Vedette also wanted to know how long she was out here, and the point of being out here. Fish weren't ever a part of her diet before. It had mostly been red meat. And she didn't think the scaled creatures filled her up as much as regular meat did. But nonetheless, it was also something she was adjusting to.

She grinned through the fish in her teeth as the other caught it and swam toward her. She motioned to follow, a treading toward the beach so that they could properly rest and dispose of their fish to either a lunch in their bellies, or more to the caches, "They have short-memory, sometimes it's only a few minutes before they return. Often I throw feed, such as fruit or seeds to see if they're in the area. Sometimes not, time is randomized." She would admit, although their memory was quite lacking at times, they still would rather stay at their newfound area then to return.

"It is more time consuming then continually to hunt overworld prey. They can stay in the deepest parts, and never return."

Vedette barely needed a motion from Vendrussel to return to the shore. As soon as it was deemed fit, Vedette started to heave herself in the water, over the small waves. She truly resembled an older man learning to swim for the first time, using too much muscle and tense, not just going with the flow like those who swam did.

"Interesting." She spoke, just loud enough so the other woman could hear her over the roar of the sea... and Vedette's almost thrashing-like motions. Of course, Vedette was interested in anything Ven had to say, but she could never see herself fishing. Maybe along the shoreline but, the way that the ocean-bound woman fished seemed insane. Then again, she pinned her for a thrill seeker.

"You like a challenge." It wasn't a question. Vedette made a statement to her, with a small up curve of one corner of her lips.
