Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Celnes had found the source of the rot.

It was place near the main river, where it was no wonder it's water would dip lightly into Labyrinthian. Some time had passed and many grew weak from drinking, but gradually some of it was clearing up. It meant whatever it was, was being washed away — and she found the carcasses that laid in the river, the organs that were left stuck in the crevices of rocks within the streams, and the smell of rotten eggs filling the area. It was tucked in a corner of The Elk's Crown..

By now any maggots that were washed away but she could see the holes in the flesh. Even as well, she could see how the tears and marks of indication of one way or another, something had messed with it. But Celnes couldn't tell whether that was scavengers grabbing so, as she could see the pecking of birds, and the predators circling above — or whether someone, who was not found of Elkshire, specifically the Queen, had done. Neither would be surprising, she had many enemies laying about, many who left and many who scorned her on first meetings.

She narrowed her eyes at the stream — rot was still filled with the air that caused her nose to crinkle.

meant to hop in much sooner, sorry for lateness. ♥

The rotten stench drew Doc to the source of that which plagued Elkshire. As he'd stated publicly, he would do his best to get to the bottom of it. Arriving on the scene however, Célnes had beaten him there. “Hello, Célnes,” He offered, trying not to startle her as she studied the waters. “Mind if I join you? Two heads are better than one.” He'd come up beside her, presuming she welcomed his presence. So too did he peer into the tainted waters, and he frowned. The eroding nature of rot and water meant it'd be difficult to spot how— if at all— the carcass had been meddled with, just by using one's eyes. Figuring this out would take logic.

“How... inconvenient that this carcass wound up in the water upstream from Elkshire.” A few maggots floated by, which he watched idly. He'd seen so many sickening things that nothing really phased him anymore. Though the smell really was difficult to bear, even for him.

He continued to think aloud; a habit, but a useful one. He was hoping they could bounce ideas off of each other. “It didn't die in the water. Somehow, it ended up here after having rotted on land, untouched enough to be sufficiently able to taint the drinking water.” His eyes were drawn skywards by the circling scavengers. “And I find it hard to believe so much of it was left unintentionally.” Doc didn't look to her, but Célnes was free to chime in at any time.

"Of course. An eye from a Sawbone is valued," perhaps a medical eye as well would due well then her own. She tried at one point to call for Cynefrid to teach her with this dabbling, but it was all so-boring and tedious that the Queen knew it was best to simply leave the more hardwork to those who valued that life. The smell of herbs was often nauseating, that even her young daughter, Melrose, had taken it's scent from being within the medic den a bit too often. She was much better lately, but kept to the hunt by herself.

"Elkshire has it's own enemies, none that claim to a pack, but many rogues and strays alike.. As you said, this by no means natural." Although she would hope it was just that, vocally opening to it was quite clear that this was.. Less then desirable, that someone intentionally wanted to mess with the waters. Her pumpkin-eyes gazed around, any evidence of anyone nearby was clear as lost. They knew not when it firstly came, or whether this was but a random effort — but purposeful, in pushing them into the river.

Her tail lightly waved in the air in displeasure.

"We should move it out."

He nodded at her insight. Unfortunately, it didn't look like they'd be getting much more in the way of answers here. What mattered now was cleaning up the aftermath.

Which... would have to be done with their mouths. Doc scarcely stifled a huff. What a strange fate. Well, he wouldn't complain. If she could stomach it, then so could he. “Right,” He said tersely, 'Let's get this over with' lingering in his tone.

Doc reminded himself of all the times he found himself elbows-deep in a grunt, or when he'd dissect zeds, as he bent down to gingerly grab a piece of waterlogged flesh. Curse this sensitive nose. At least the water diluted much of the stench.

It took a while, but piece by piece, he removed the source of illness from the stream— ideally with some assistance, but he'd get it done either way. In the absence of toothpaste, he'd absolutely be cleansing out his mouth with peppermint after this.
