Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

More than three weeks had passed since Dalmatia and her sisters had been born to Duskguard, and much had changed in such little time. The four had grown considerably, gaining strength with each day; they could see and hear, though the world was still a blurred and confusing place. Not surprisingly, the spotted child was still quite fearful of everything around her. She didn't like sudden movement or the way shadows shifted, and some strange sounds beyond the safety of her family's den made her feel a little edgy.

She knew and trusted her parents and siblings, for they carried the scent of comfort. Familiarity. Having recently found her feet, Dalmatia would make great effort to toddle off and place herself out of sight whenever a strange face visited the den, usually behind her towering father.

Things were, thakfully, rather quiet in the Priestess' chamber as evening crept closer. The spotted youngster entertained herself by gnawing on a large (compared to her, at least) bone that had likely been left for such a purpose.

Once again the cat told himself that he would not share his food, but upon filling himself; he found that he was repeating a pattern.  Again, the cat entered the dwelling place of Olive to deposit what he would say where scraps.  Curiously however, the haunch that the tiger lugged with him was actually a prime piece, not gnawed chewed or gnarled.

Skulking into the cave the big cat's vision was partially obscured by the protrusion of the leg he was carrying.  Trying to stay silent, Kuhn placed the fresh meal in a corner.  He could slip in, and get out.

Though when his vision was cleared of the haunch, his face looked nervous as he looked right at the little spotted mini olivetiberius.   Slowly backpedaling, the towering cat inched toward the exit.

She was content to chew, and found it a great relief for rapidly growing milk teeth. Dalmatia continued to gnaw, her spotted rump turned to the cave's entrance and little tail curled close to a haunch, forepaws working clumsily to try holding the bone in place. At one point it slipped free of her grasp and she shuffled after it, which was when she took note of another presence within her safety bubble.

Orange, white and black - all blurred together and moving slowly. Dalmatia blinked, making out the shape of a head on a body and four strong legs, then parted her jaws in a terrified squeal to alert her family.

Aurelia slept soundly close by, curled up in a tight ball of fur and drooping ears. She was an active child, much like her siblings, but seeing how nothing was presently occurring, she had settled down for a pleasant evening nap and found herself dreaming of flowing rivers full of milk.

A thin line of drool eked out from the corner of her mouth.

Suddenly, a startled squeal jerked her awake, and Aurelia's eyes flew open.

A monster! An enormous, striped monster! And it was attacking Dalmatia!

Without prompting, a pitiful growl rattled out from her pinched jaws, and she lunged forward - stumbled - then fell.

Dalmatia!

Slipping away, the big cat was about to escape.  Though, the eye contact with the pup sealed his fate, and time seemed to slow as the mini olivetiberius' jaw dropped.  Pinning themselves back against the tigers large skull, his ears somewhat shielded his senses from the oncoming squeal. The cat lifted on paw off the ground hovering it above the pup resisting the urge to bop the small child on the head.

When the silver pup launched its attack in order to aide its sibling, the cat's large head turned to observe.  When the pup unceremoniously tumbled forward, a small grin smeared across his face, showing the tips of his teeth.  A small chuckle escaped from the cat's chest, as he looked on at the child's misfortune splayed across the floor.

Looking behind himself, on the left then the right, he made sure there wasn't any more pups lurking behind.

And there was! Awoken up by the sounds of small snarls and so, Euphemia woke up to see a unknown entity in the den. Large, an unfamiliar color and overall even his markings were not something that was known, and by no means a wolf! A beast, it seemed all the young were simultaneously yelling within their minds, and the young shakti, scrambled up to align herself against her twin-set.

However instead she shakily stood in front, wholly expecting to be ate — but she would protect Dalmatia with Aurelia! She thought, in near-tears.

^^

In retrospect, he should have realised a tiger probably wouldn't make sense to the girls with their life only really having known Olive and himself, in the short time that they had been able to open their eyes and see. So really, the scent of his best friend and his girls should have initially given him the thought of, "oh. They would have no idea what's going on", from both sides. The wolf cubs were probably alien to Kuhn as he was to them.

He really hadn't thought that through, to be honest. The titan galloped slowly towards the sound of his troubled girls, his initial fury and panic having been dampened by the scent of Kuhn in the immediate area. Aside from Olive, Kuhn was the other creature who he would trust his girls' lives with. The titan put great stock in his friendship with Kuhn and knew that he wouldn't ever purposefully hurt the girls, he would just have no idea what the fuck to do with them.

On his approach he would smell meat, damaged ears cuffing forward as he realised Kuhn must have been bringing food for Olive. His lip quirked, his plan having been clearly waylaid by the girls noticing him. It was easy to see the big cat looming in the entrance, arse facing out and no doubt the girls somewhere in front of him. He would join the fray, molten gaze looking to the cubs and he noticed that Dalmatia was certainly in a tizzy. Tiberius had began to notice that the world seemed to scare their speckled girl more than the others, her sensitivity delicate. "Ay ay," he rumbled as he bumped Kuhn's shoulder I'm greeting, humming towards the girls as he shooshed them lightly. The twins stood in front of their sister, causing Tiberius to quirk a brow. "Why all tha noise, lil' luvs?" He rumbled as he would dip his head to nose at all three girls crowns, lingering on Dalmatia. "Don't tell me is cause of this orange an' black kitten," they likely wouldn't understand the tease in his tone when he called Kuhn a kitten, but the feline would. He supposed that to them, he was big and different and scary.

He would need to teach them that Kuhn was a friend. Complex and sometimes rash with his decisions but he was a damn good friend, loyal and determined. He believed in Tiberius long before he had become a Chief and had seen his potential when no one else had. The man had been trying and really, isn't that all anyone could do? Tiberius would be hard pressed to find someone be a better friend to him than Kuhn. ^^

He was huge, and she knew he could easily gobble her up. A little thing like her would be swallowed by a creature as large as the cat, and hot tears spilled down her cheeks as she wailed. There was movement all around her: from sisters who sprung into action at Dalmatia's crying, from the beast itself as he hovered a large limb above her (ohmygod was he going to squish her!?), then at last from her most beloved protector.

Her father was here! He'd save them all. Dalmatia's shrieking lessened as Tiberius stepped in closer to investigate, but she could hardly see a single thing through the haze of tears in her eyes. She rubbed at them with an oversized paw, her lip trembling.

Euphemia rose to the challenge despite her own fears, standing in solidarity with her twin. Surely they stood a chance against the great beast together; they were two halves of a whole, identical in size and stature (and, for the present moment, skill).

She felt her fur bristle - it was very silly-looking - and she clumsily scrambled to her paws again, ready to face down the monster. Aurelia took a breath - closed her eyes - then lunged a second time, hoping to make contact with any part of the creature's body so that she might bring it to its proverbial knees. She had to save Dalmatia. She had to save them all!

Instead, she bumped into her dad.

She shook her head, staring up at him with an expression of bewilderment, eyes darting from him and back to Kuhn as if to ask, "why aren't you doing anything?!"

Tiberius said the word 'kitten', and Aurelia felt in some primal part of her soul that this was not at all the correct term to describe... him.

Still fighting back the urge to bop the crying child, he set his paw back on the floor when he felt the Titian enter bumping into his shoulder at the mouth of the den. A playful growl and a small smirk escaped him, when the Titian refered to him as kitten.

The tiger watched as the man entered the den to re establish order. Another pup barreled forward with the intent to kill, only to be foiled by her father's leg. "They certainly are brave...", Purred the cat with a small chuckle, taking another step in, sitting himself by the entrance.

Tossing his tail back and forth, he observed the small wolves with curiosity, pondering how odd it was that he was allowed to be looking down at the young of species that where thought to be mortal enemies.

Singling out the pup crying in front of him (Dalmatia) the big cat cocked his head with perked ears. Bringing his paw back up, he very softly swatted at the child, just to see what would happen.

While her twin looked at their father in accusation, Euphemia tilted her head in confusion. Looking back and forth between the monster before them and her father who was awfully calm, acting as if it was but a small bug that would sometimes settle within the den. She kept looking between in a puzzlement, not really sure what to do except..

Start barking at the tiger. In defense!

Dalmatia's cries lessened by his presence but didn't stop, her lungs likely as big as her for how long she managed to go on when she started up. He stood with her, momentarily distracted by @Euphemia has she ran into his leg. Tiberius tilted his head down to her with a quirked brow, her look almost accusatory between himself and Kuhn. He couldn't help it, he snorted, lifting a paw to nudge her closer to Dalmatia in hopes another body might comfort Dally. At Kuhn's purr, Tiberius grinned, "brave, aye. Somethin' like tha'." He agreed, gaze flickering between his daughters.

Kuhn gave a gentle sway of play (he had no doubt that Kuhn was interested to see if Dalmatia might react differently than offer more tears) just as Aurelia began barking. "Yer ginna star' them all off," he grumbled to Kuhn though his mangled lips twitched with amusement. "Aurelia, luv, Kuhn is our friend," he told her, despite the chaos that was ignited around them -- that she was an active participant in.

"Yer ginna 'ave ta git used ta 'im, girls. M'best mate, 'e is. So yer ginna see 'im whenever 'e comes knockin' ta tha Vale," she and her sisters would need to learn to accept him and in time, they'd learn of his playful nature. He had a feeling that Dalmatia might need someone like Kuhn around more than the others, to offer her some different tastes. ^^

She continued to cry, tears tumbling down her speckled cheeks and snot dripping from a nostril. The spotted child sniffed the mucus back and blinked up past through the haze in her eyes at her most beloved protector. He was here to save them from the intruder within their cave, but she was still terribly afraid - for herself, for her sisters, for the battle that was sure to ensue.

There was no brave display in her honour, however. Instead, the dark-furred Alpha stood by and watched while a massive paw swiped at her tiny frame, causing Dalmatia to topple dramatically to the floor. She yowled in terror, curling close to herself and tucking her tail to her rear, her trembling frame racked by sobs. She wasn't hurt, not one bit, but to be batted at by a huge tiger was all very traumatic for such a sensitive little thing.

Euphemia (or was that Aurelia!?) started barking at the cat and their father spoke up, but Dalmatia was too far gone to concentrate on his verbal reassurance. She continued to wail, inconsolable, and buried her face beneath her speckled paws to will the fear away.
