Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

@Feather@Winter
She'd come to realize north was a bust, and had been angling east instead, hoping Winter wouldn't notice her altering course from the direction that would definitely, 100% lead them to some forest or something. Sane was in her eyes, between her toes and her teeth, and her pelt was most definitely full of it. Above them, the sun began to set colouring the sky a rosy-red tinged with orange, a sight that she might have appreciated has she not been in a Mood. Grumbling, she peered back toward Winter; despite their squabbling, she was beginning to feel just a bit bad for leading them into more and more sandy dunes. Not quite bad enough, however, to let him have a go at navigating.

Squinting back into the sunset, she drew air into her lungs before letting another "HELLOOO" rip, though this time her howl-yell cracked during the drawn-out "ooo". She was thirsty, and hungry, and pretty sure this might be her fault. As if reading her mind, far above a vulture angled toward them, circling higher on a thermal. Grimacing, she paused, waiting for Winter to catch up. It was all well and good to keep distance between them during the day, but she'd prefer to stay near him as the sun set.

The day was long, and hot, and he complained - loudly. Winter hated the heat of the sun on his back, though it was particularly unbearable out there in the open with literally no shelter to cool off. He huffed and complained almost constantly, likely the reason why Juniper carried on ahead and left his fat ass behind.

That was alright, he supposed. He was getting a little tired of looking at her sour face, which irritated him more as the suns rays continued to bore relentlessly on his raven-marked dorsal. This climate was not suited to Winter at all, having not only inherited his father's Eurasian pelage but maintained a substantial layer of puppy fat beneath.

“So,” he panted as he finally caught up to his sister, and relief slackened his muscles as he noticed the setting of that vicious golden sphere as it neared the horizon, “I think I'm -” He dropped his hindquarters to the sand with an exhausted sigh, “gonna die out here.”

@Shiloh is far in the background somewhere, but please don't wait for him at this point.

Company now obtained, seeking out his children was not quite as high on his list of priorities as it ought to have been. He had no idea where he was, let alone where the ocean was — although following the river seemed to be a promising lead — so there was no reason to go rushing off into the unknown. Except, well, of course, Kincaid was all about the unknown, and rushing off into things. So instead of following the river or bunking down for the night, Kincaid left the lake behind and headed back into the badlands.

He stopped in his tracks when a voice called out — presumably to them — and looked 'round to see what his coyote thought of this. Of course, being that Kincaid was Bigger and therefore In Charge, his opinion did not much matter, and Kincaid was a nosey sort of fellow. He set off in the direction of the voice, shouting back a half-hearted, "WHAT?" in hopes of better pinpointing the source. Hopefully, they wouldn't mind his friend. Or if they did, his friend hopefully had the good sense to keep his distance.

It was over the next rise that he caught sight of the duo, and mentally cursed his bad luck. More kids. But these ones seemed to be in rather more dire straights than the last two, and so he felt obliged to at least see what they had to say for themselves.

"Now what's a couple'a kids in full winter gear doin' out in the sands?" he asked them as he neared, stopping a good distance away to draw himself up to full (but rather inconsequential, compared to these two) height. "Looks like you're both a little far from home."

As he plops down beside her, Juniper is seized by that fear shared by all who slap their sibling and have them start crying. It's guilt and anxiousness and the desire to prove "you're fine, see? don't tell mom, ok?". She boops her muzzle against his shoulder in what she hopes is a vaguely reassuring manner, eyeing Winter. "you're fine. we'll be fine. besides, it can't —"  The echoing shout cut her off then, and she pivots, squinting into the sunset again. Before she can muster up the air to shout out a reply, something, someone, crests the dune the sun seems intent on hiding behind. The cowboy on the dune straightens as he pauses, silhouetted by the red glow of the sun. If she'd known what a mirage was, she'd likely have thought him one before he started to speak.

She straightens beside her brother, though her eyes remain narrowed as she squints at the man and the glow behind him. "Hi mi'sir!"  A wince; she'd been unable to choose between Mister and Sir and ended up slurring out the both at once. "I'm Juniper and this's my brother Winter. We woke up here but, um—" She's still unwilling to admit they're lost, no matter how close to death her brother thinks he is. A moment's hesitation, and then, "— we're trying to leave now." A glance at her brother, seeking his impression of the cowboy before them.

He wasn't serious. Okay, maybe a little, because Winter could be dramatic at times, but he didn't really think he would succumb there. At his hottest he might've wanted to, though the thought would go as fleetingly as it came.

They'd be alright. They always were.

Juniper poked her nose to the boy's plush furs, and he lifted his warm eyes to seek her own. Finding her gaze only briefly, an ash-blonde lobe flicked forward in the direction of a response to his sister's call, and his snout was swift to follow. Squinting into the sunlight, Winter found the canine-shaped silhouette of a stranger at the brow of a sand dune, but he didn't bother rising to his paws again. Might as well stay seated if it was time for chit-chat with the locals.

Content to let his sister take charge of the conversation (because talking shit is what girls do best, of course), the young wanderer set about trying to claw sand free from his dense pelage.

What? Kincaid's head pulled back in confusion, ears spraying briefly before they pricked forward again. He slid down the dune, half trotting, to come within speaking distance of the pair.

"Mi'kid," he returned, looking skeptically between the two. He was aware that he smelled like he'd been rolling around in coyote fur (because he had been) but hoped it wouldn't be brought up. Still, there was no disguising it.

"There's water back the way we came," he replied, glancing over his shoulder. "A lake. Green lands. A river that flows to the west." Any of that ring a bell?

Sorry I'm on my phone I crie

Winter shook his head, freeing sand from the denser pelt that made up his "mane", then rose a forelimb to swipe at an ear made irritated by a stray grain. It was stubborn, and he was tempted to roll around in attempt to clear it, but one quick glance down served as a reminder of how that idea would make things a hundred times worse.

He didn't pay much attention to Juniper's conversation with the stranger from the dunes, but the mention of green land and water injected new life into him. The yearling lit up on hearing those words, and at once he was on his paws and beaming excitedly.

“Let's go!” Winter encouraged his littermate, his tail sweeping as he pressed on past the deliverer of wonderful news. He paused only to announce a “thanks!” as an afterthought, before he was fast on his way to a much-needed drink.
