Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

 • There is no set activity requirement to write
 • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
 • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

A jump of some sort. That was why it had come here with Vendrussel. Would the light attend? It did not know, the light often seemed disappointed with it… was he a scourge to her perfection? An affront? Should he try harder? Would this be sufficient? Either way this was the key to staying within the pack, to be nearer to her.

 So he would jump.

He stood up high on the rocky surface, looking first down and then at the blue she-wolf. The wolf of water. There was no fear in its eyes, only the usual blankness. The boy also felt no fear, only a determination to not drown and to not disappoint. Flawless. Perfection. It was what he strived for.

Wordless, it stood and waited with sickly yellow eyes turned towards Vendrussel. When should it go?

"Part of those who joined Dragonford, are required to jump off the cliff before allowed to even enter the isle. Though not the one we are on, the one with the gate." There was two mounds within the dive. Together, bonded with a strange rope that the waves rarely ever reached, and it swayed lightly while tying the two spires together. The larger of the mixture held the torii gate, no one knew why it was there — but she felt it was almost like an entrance, to a new life given at the ford. Beneath stood the smaller one.. One that was a suitable height, for young.

"In my homeland, our young would dive off the cliff," she refrained from the mortality rates. For they would be on the higher cliffs themselves, were below even the jagged peaks raised. There was no help, only awaiting the young to swim to shore themselves around the same age Ghost was ; the trials whether they were destined to live or not. Perhaps if fates said otherwise, Vendrussel would not be here. She did not, want to repeat it either — remembering the heartache of friends and family losing their sons and daughter, and siblings falling into a despair watching their littermate grasp into the depths of the sea.

An honor, they say. She agreed — a proven of strength, but not when.. One falls to it's darkness.

"When you are a year, you will then dive off there. But as you are now halfway," she guessed, "it's time to leap from here, and take the steps to become one of us." She smiled at him, within a pride and joy for he — was the very first to take this step through. It was true he hadn't been around since a very young age, and only discovered when a bit older ; but nonetheless, was slowly growing up within their ford.

"We call it the Dragon's Call."

She spoke, he listened, even turning his head to look upon the larger cliff before silently turning back around. That other one, that was what he would jump from when older but he still did not feel fear. Did not feel anything but indifference, really. It was a thing that he needed to do, so, would. It only felt a readiness, that it would jump whenever the need arose. Would do anything, if the need arose.

The year mark was rapidly approaching but was still far off yet. So, it would rise to the challenge, walking to the edge to look at the crashing waves below. One look would be given to Vendrussel, nothing was in its gaze. The Dragon’s Call.

It looked back down the cliff and then… it jumped. Without an pomp and circumstance, with no warning, with no emotion. It fell.

 Down.

  Down.

   Down.

It felt… intense. It felt… not bad. The rush to its gut, the feeling of weightlessness.

 The crash of the water.

How it sank down beneath the waves and away from the sunlight.

It seemed like it might not resurface… but then…

The legs would kick, the body fighting as it struggled upwards. Listening to the instincts that bid it to cling to life and fight the water which would drag it down.

His head burst from the surface of the water, briefly looking about to get his bearings. Wide eyes stayed open against the burning spray. Pain was inconsequential. Fleeting. It was no matter.

But life? That was worth living.

It struck out towards the shoreline, heading slowly to the shore. Fighting the exhaustion that would bog it down and kill it. It would not lose at life. Not even as water crashed over its head. No. Keep going.

It was there. Claws scrabbling against sand, body trembling from effort… but it did not fall. It stood with lowered head but eyes that were wide and staring at the ground below.

He was alive. He was here.

She watched them dive, into the waters and struggle against the waves itself, "May Nathesdied guide you." To the other it may not seem like anyone ; but for the culture of Vendrussel, she was an important dragon to them. The protector of the ocean, one that guides lost wolves from the waters onto land itself and strays away from the watery beast, the other dragon who brings others down to it's lair. She hoped, that within this land their influence remained.

He survived ; as he should. Vendrussel would've dived if she saw true struggle and a drowning, but he emerged and swam to the edge of the spire where she met him and smiled, "Welcome as our first young diver." He didn't seem someone that wanted an affectional grooming, so instead she lifted her paw and attempted to touch his temple within her own affectionate way.

Vendrussel was there. Comforting? Was that what she was doing with the touch? He allowed it. Not rejecting nor behaving affectionately towards it… just existing with it. Content in the knowledge that he was to be accepted here. The light would not have to worry about his being expelled due to weakness… from the pack nor from life itself.

The ghost would give a single nod of its head, sharp and quick like a bird. An acceptance of her words and of his life here. For now, this was his home and his pack. Vendrussel… even if she wasn’t his light Was still not a bad wolf, nor a bad leader. She was not top priority in his life… but she still was someone he would listen to in the absence of his own personal leader.

I hadn’t intended to write this as an ending XD but it ended up sounded that way… if you want more feel free to add more but we could also probably end it here
