Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

If @Campion followed her into the ocean, he would feel the slight coolness of the water. Though, breaking free from the bonethick fog that laid on the brim and did not follow into the ocean, at times, anyway. Today was within a clear view as she swam into the oceans depth, an inky and black abyss was beneath them that could not be seen ; an assumed lair of the beast that laid within the sepulcher. Vendrussel tossed her head back and smiled, her nose then pointing toward a particular island that was past a few of the spiked rocks.

Her paws would would find the edge of the coast, and would motion him to climb upwards, "You will be tested here, to join Dragonford."

His coat briefly resisted the penetration of the cold water but, within seconds it logged. This swim alone became a test of strength, to which he did not speak and only focused on pumping his legs through the water. They moved quickly, powerfully, and with purpose as he both swam against subtle waves and kept himself above the water.
He would not be eaten, he would not be consumed. The man's eyes looked under him, into the deep black, obsidian depths and imagined a wailing beast laying within. Mouth open and ready for the winter wolf to fatigue and give up.
The white beast looked back to the leader. She smiled, making him think that she must enjoy this activity. That thought alone made him all that more motivated to impress both her and the imaginary (or not) leviathan that stirred under them.
Nodding, Campion would do his best to observe the island they approached, further curious as to what this would involve.

Once feeling large stone under-paw, the beast scrambled quickly up the rocky shore. The weight he carried in the water doubled, and he visibly exerted to pull both his own weight and the weight of the water in his coat up onto solid ground.
He stood there for a moment, letting some of the water drain before giving his best and most aggressive shot at shaking the rest out. The man's fur spiked up and clumped together, making him look as though covered in thorns, scales, or maybe even icicles. Or perhaps he just looked silly, no longer as fluffy and poofy as before.

"Tested?" He finally asked, observing the isle again, this time from along it's shore, before looking back at Ven once again.

As they travelled to the tip of the isle ; she took note of his structure. His large in size was not just fur, for she could see his lean muscles not drenched against his fur. Amused he didn't sink for his mass — although Vendrussel held muscles, she was more slim compared to more battle-ready bred canines. She ran more, swam more, kept a slim-tone then build so. At the very least ; she wanted to remain pretty.

To the torii gate, standing right in front of so, before passing so she nodded, "Here is where we test individuals. Where they dive below those cliffs, and resurface with a nickname. To be, one of us." A confidence, raising her head tall within a pride as she smiled. Fur drenched without a brushing off, and looked up Campion with an excitement — as then her paw, beckoned toward the cliff.

Icy eyes looking curiously at the structures no wolf could make. How long had this 'gate' stood? Those high arches, letting him pass through nothing and yet coming out feeling changed. He waited for her to answer his question but, was left with a few more when she did. Dive? Cliff? The beast gave the woman a worried look but, one that appeared ready and brave none-the-less. Had she done it too? Had all members of her pack done it?
Her paw lifted with a graceful edge, pointing towards the cliff before them. Camp followed the direction to observe the drop off, where he could already hear the waves below smacking against the rock.

Stepping to the edge he just stared for a moment, clearly deep in thought. Expression complex, emotions stirring and pulling. When he finally looked up, that gaze in his eyes had changed. And he spoke.

"Before here, I had four brothers." The man began. "They were all strong in their own right but, Clay." He stopped to reminisce, a look on his face. Remembering his brother made him feel small. Campion was the biggest dog of all 5 of them but Clay could kick his ass any day. He knew that, and deeply respected Clay for that.
"Clay was a man no wolf could challenge. He proved his strength in both mind and body" It was then the beast stepped away from the edge of the cliff and walked towards Ven, stopping and giving them a few feet of distance.

"Fight me." His nose lowered, eyes forward, gazing with a different gaze than he had had all day. Something dark twisting inside him, like a switch had gone off. "Prove to me your strength, and I will be loyal to you."

He had no idea if she would take him up on his challenge, but, he readied his stance nonetheless. Feet planted, maw half open, ready.

Vendrussel enjoyed the activity so. It was a great part of her homeland, and although it lead to more deaths then happiness ; she forgo'd the more dread part of it so. A safer area, and if something were to happen she was on standby to help. What mattered most to her, was those wolves willing to take that dive. The incentive, of asking to do so and the willingness, the bravery, on diving and finally, becoming one of them. No one turned away, yet.

She listened, and grinned. As the dragoness asked of them, she didn't shy away when another asked for something in return ; but no had, except him. Her tail rose as her paws ruffled lightly, a nod on an acceptance of such a challenge. Her mind already twirled with a goal — to bring such man to fall, off the cliff by their own battles. The space around was large enough that it could even festivals for a group, and yet with rocks it can be slippery.

She could do it.

And she started — reckless, in her pursuit but Vendrussel attempted to use the luring of surprise on this attempt. She charged at him, face-front as he stood at the cliff and ready to simple tackle him off, whether, with, or without her. Her claws were stretched out, an amused smile as her jaw ripped open with a snarl of sorts ; one without a malice. Though she kept her body low to the ground, back-legs ready to take a stand and halt her process should he move.

The look in his icy orbs was no longer warm and friendly but savage and wild. A wicked smile parted his maw, pleased deeply that she accepted with a stance.

She was quick, he would give her that. His paws dug into the dirt and though she did collide and swing, her weight only tug at him a little. The beast was like an unmoving boulder, though that smile still charmed his face.
He would lean up, hoping that it would loosen her grip thus allowing him to catch her rear leg and pull. Hopefully away from the edge of the cliff.
It was a worthy spar but, he didn't wish any serious harm to come to her. She was strong, wise and, extremely brave to readily accept his challenge.
Either way, if he did manage to pull her away or not, he would rear up like a horse- ready to bombard her with his own sheer mass.

The man stood still ; a boulder amongst the waves. Though he had might and powess, the dragoness was not a push-over. She had experience, from training to the homelands to the various brawls and fights since coming to the region ; to her new home. She held muscle and so, height was above others but below the man who dared to wish for a fight, that she, was happily willing to give.

He pushed forward and raised up — reminding her of the horse that soared to the skies and within thought, she backed up. Away from the edge, to her disappointment as she rapidly shifted to charging at the side of so. Though could not seem to topple him down ; the best that Vendrussel could do is wear a man down. Gradually herd to where she wanted, so to the right did she run, snipping at his flank and legs, and would continue aiming her fangs to his lower body, his belly and paws.

She bumped him and though he would grunt, the boulder of a man remained still. After her second go at it, the man couldn't help himself but let out a hearty and full, deep-chested chuckle. He so did enjoy a good spar, especially ones that were (for the most part) in good nature. The man could recall training his brothers to fight better, letting them sink teeth into his own flesh just so they could improve.

Campion bit his tongue, observing how she quickly fled to his flank and nipped. Her clearest advantages being her speed and stature, small enough that from her lowered perspective, his underbelly became a target. Still a smile on his face, the man returned the favor by trying his best at getting her in front of him. Rearing his head around like the great beast he was, a lighthearted snarl coming with it. His teeth would fall just short of her, snapping with an audible "CLACK" every time.
The way she moved was serpent like, and his smile faded not to a look of defeat but one of pride and respect. She was good, clearly battle hardened, and unafraid of him. Time slowed to him for a moment, watching her graceful movements. Precision in every step. Gray-blue and white fur colliding with the wind underneath her. Quite beautiful, if he did admit to himself.

His distraction was clear, though he would flinch away from her nipping maw if she managed to catch his skin. Paws taking small steps behind, cliff at his back. Campion would wait until she moved just enough in front of him and leaned up again. Relying on his two back legs alone to either catch her underneath his paws or slip into the ocean below.

Gradually did she push him, knowing force was not the way. He tried to intimidate her back, snapping with loud chomps within the air just a neck area from railing against her fur, but yet to actually take part in grabbing her flank. A continual motion of snipping at his paws, a herding toward the edge until finally push him back to the edge itself. He raised high, horse and growled, snarling as his powerful paws would so — but she decided to take a reckless pursuit, whether to be success or not. He raised himself up — and indicating to fall down, but within that split second.. His belly was free.

Perhaps a trap ; but spars and fights are not without a risk. Instead of facing full frontage, Vendrussel moved to throw her shoulder at his lower side, knowing full well the force of his weight could descend upon her back. She hoped this nudge, would send him into the midst ; but she also wasn't sure with their angle, that she wouldn't fall along with him.

It was clear he hadn't noticed the cliff getting closer to his heels. Though the look of surprise only reached his face when they didn't touch the expected ground. The beast had fallen many times, in many spars and battles, and was awaiting the harsh but welcomed feeling of ground. Perhaps he was stupid or, she was extremely clever.
There was no time to sing his praises or congratulate her, for he was falling, and they were falling together. His neck threw forward from the force and his jaw snapped with it, a fluid and rolling motion. Hoping to snatch a bit of her fur for if she was willing to send him over, it was only fitting that she would come with.

The feeling of wind was strange on his back. For a moment he felt light, floating on air. Before of course gravity clocked in, making him feel like a pile of rocks. The slowing down of time was brief but, he noted the mist that rose up as they fell and the look of Ven's face as she fell too.
Why, he was content with this. Die or not, this was a worthy noble and graceful way to go. Both the power of battle and the power of comradery came together in this moment. He hoped that he would soften her fall.

A wise, strong, and capable alpha was one worth dying for.

She grinned, her pushing and his paw fleeing from the edge of the cliff. Hearing the sound of claws scrapping against as his body would fall into it's depths ; the welcoming of the newest dragon to the ford itself. She had pushed others before, such as Kei — though Vendrussel found herself asking them more to dive instead of forcing it.. Brought out whether they truly were brave enough to be one of them ; but it couldn't be denied she found amusement tossing the other.

Technically didn't toss, but forced him off. Her shoulder brushing against and he fleeing form — but it wasn't the end of her battle, for she felt his snapping at the air and the tugging at her fur! "Ah, fuck," so she swore, her own paws now scrambling to catch the edge and feeling body being pulled through. The wind wisping as the weight started to drag her, and her single paw unable to reach!

And she fell. Alongside with him. She tried to twist her body in a way that would headbutt him, a cranium bashing for the anger that brought on being dragged with, despite the amused smile and laughter that was brought right before they fell into the depths. She felt the water rush and breach her fur, and kicked up her legs, paddling them furiously to reach it's surface.

"Welcome to the Ford, a rebirthed nickname as the Arctic Dragon."

She bonked him! Her head smacked right onto his own, thick skull. The "BONK" being nearly audible. Before he could react though, he plunged into the water. The splash sucking air underneath and as he forced his eyes open from beneath the waves, he watched them rise to the surface.
Again using what strength he had, he rose best he could, fighting the water that drenched him. A quick and deep breath entering his lungs as his nose poked up.

Camp looked around for a moment, searching for Ven to make sure she was okay as well. The look of worry soon fled like a hare though, seeing her smile above the waves. 'Arctic Dragon'. His tail would wag if it wasn't sinking heavy beneath him.

His laugh howled out, looking to the sky. "What a spar!" He cooed, clearly pleased. "You have my loyalty, Ven." And though he still smiled, he gave those last words a serious tone. Wanting to make sure she knew he meant it entirely.
"Now let's get out of this damn water before my ass sinks." Flicking his paw, he sent a splash her way and chuckled.

Smiling and nodding, "I'll lead you to the isle," where so the rest lived. If he had any questions she didn't mind, and hoped he would quickly get acquainted with the rest upon the isle. They all had.. Interesting, personalities to say ; and she would think he would find them rather enjoyable as long as didn't meet the child or the tigress first, both unnerving in their own way — she of course, wouldn't say that out loud.

And thus led them to where the ford lives, upon the isle in the middle of the sepulcher.
