Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

She was counting the days down, to how early it could be. Though consequences to their growth was a possibility, Celnes had shrugged it off, placing such worries at the back of her mind. By the time a few days would come they would be shy of just three weeks, and by then, to pawn them off from anothers. Her duty as a milk-maid would be over, and she so desperately wanted to part herself from. If anyone else was a mother in Elkshire at the time, surely the Queen would've already given them her brood.

She was halfway out of the den, head on the rip of the outside as she had the sun rays graze her head. In the background the four were growing, steadily. Their eyes had opened and she knew they could not properly see too much yet, that would soon change. She was curious on what color eyes they would be ; maybe that could help indicate who such a father would be. Unless, they were her own. They moved more, albeit unsteadily. She couldn't help but think about her first and how cute and small they were — but the four now, seemed more of annoyance with each cry they gave.

She couldn't bond with them ; feeling like a failure to sleep with someone of unknown origins and have them as the result.

When she gazed back at them, her tail curled against a few, but generally sighed.. Waiting it out.

Soon. Soon she can move.

Time marched on, and with it, the puppy grew steadily.

Slowly, but surely, his senses had taken shape. Each day came and went, with it he could see better. Shapes had gained forms, much as he had once not so long ago. With it, more recently, the sensation of sounds took a greater hold of him; he could pick out new, finer details. Top it all over a nose that was learning what matched, what didn't... and with a growing body, he was more armed for the world than ever before.

He had wandered his way beyond the immediate reach of his siblings-pile, and flattened himself upon a patch of cool den there. A part of him already wished to turn back to their security, but distraction came when he realized their mother's motion towards the den's entrance. Settling in anyway beneath a small sigh-whine before placing his chin to the dirt, he then watched her from there.

His eyes were wide and wondering as she looked back upon them. He had no capacity for more than that at the moment, the depths of it all plenty lost of him--until his focus was interrupted by a small hiccup, and the boy smacked his lips, still peering up at his parent.

Her small son — Weirs. Like Faust he mainly held browns and a few points of white, almost twin-like Celnes would dub if not for the depth of markings each held within their furs differed. Small, and peering, looking at her that tugged some heart-strings that she wished would tug more. The Queen felt guilty — she felt awful bringing them into a world that she did not want, and surely not to the Deorwine standards as well. A glancing, toward @Selwyn who was the only one out of them all.. That held without a stain.

She crawled back into the den, wrapping tightly around the young. Though she could not bond, perhaps the guilt had blocked her so. For in the end they were not under the premise of love or power, but the sheer mistake that she had done. .. At the very least, others would love them more then she ever could. And soon, she would leave the four to them, and their devices.

Maybe one day she could grow to like them more.

Time irrelevant, he blinked up at her for as long as it took. Understanding was a vague creature still. He was either appeased, or not, ultimately.. and lacked all the complexity to know what exactly it was his mother peered back at him with each time she laid her eyes upon the brood of bastards. Everything of the sort went over him at this tender age and since he wasn't hungry, or dissatisfied with the temperature yet, he didn't have to complain about any of it.

When she moved, though, that sparked a burst of satisfaction that perked his head right back up and made his tail wag. He did not hear any of his other siblings reacting yet either, and he hiccupped again when she moved to encircle them. Motivated, young Weirs gathered his legs and pounced himself closer to her fur's comforting smell with a small, playful yip as he snapped his jaws towards whatever piece of her might be closest--not like a hungering pup searching for a meal, but one playfully exploring texture, and what all he could get away with here with his mother's rich furs before him, at his mercy.

She licked his forehead, "Maybe there will be a day where you all will be like the first." As useful, and moreso. She was displeased how her young disappeared, but what can she so do? The few that were still loyal were quiet ones, but around. One sent out into another realm for a hopeful use on another day, for sending her young to another pack meant they would be well to behave, and to be kept eye upon. Her daughter was not a liar, and lightly feared Celnes enough to share whatever they might be planning. Or otherwise, another ally to add under her belt. There were not too many packs around the temperate, as far as she knew, besides the Nightwalkers, Pantheon, and Elkshire. Beyond was questionable.

She didn't have time to venture out herself.

Bargaining chips perhaps, she could use for so. The thought to use her first brood with that same notion was quickly thrown out once they were born ; for in truth she loved them deeply. She wanted them to be loyal to her. But what about these young..?

What would she do with them? Such thoughts would occur as the young would play and shove himself into her fur, and she let so willingly. Never once did she shove them aside or treat them like bags — only, an indifference was usually given, with the slightest bits of warmth given. They were still Deorwines — they needed to survive.

For all of his worth, he beamed beneath her attentions--the swipe of her tongue across her head promptly stilling him, far more important than any other rooting around was going to be doing in that moment. Weirs remained quiet, though, like he was absorbing her words. Of course, he couldn't grasp what it was she meant, really.. not that weight of comparison to the litter she intended before them, not yet. Maybe a more developed thought might look back upon it, but for now, he simply liked hearing her talk to him. Didn't matter about what.

“Ay..” he burbled back, mostly nonsense and wide eyes peering up at her, reverently. “Ay-bee,” he added, quieter, trying to parrot one of the words she had given him then while his mind tried to wrap around first--a basic concept, but in this context fuzzy yet.

Maybe one day he would amount to something the lineage could be proud of, or maybe not. He had a lot of growing to do before anyone would be able to guess, but nothing major seemed to be stopping the white-tipped whelp from meeting his milestones so far at the very least. The rest remained to be seen and for someone as unexpected as him, it probably wasn't the worst, after all.

Weirs wiggled in close to her still, trying to find a spot to settle in with.

They were growing to an age where they'd be able to speak, "Good job." Would the Queen nonchalantly say as he attempted to repeat her words, words he most likely knew not. It'd be a dear shame if they grew up unfitted to the name, so at the very least they would be raised and taught correctly. Just as she told her first young, they too would would grow to refer to her as 'Mother,' or by her title 'Queen.'

A few good moments to be but a mother — as she oh-so missed her first litter being as young and cute. Not to mention upon a leash. Celnes roamed back inside, allowing the rest to snuggle upon her so. The last few moments they'd be able to before it became a rarity, at least from her. She imagined the others like @Teodora would be quick to take up the motherly title as a warmer.

In a young pup's way, Weirs basked in her attentions, good and warm. He didn't know how rare they would become.. or what the world would have in store once he grew up and out into it. The pale-toed whelp took it by the day with no other choice. But, even so, his simple system appreciated a mother's praise while it was bestowed. “Ooob” he murmured, satisfied and quieting further still.

Deepening the opportunity while he had it, he continued to get comfortable. It didn't take long for him to snuggle in sweetly, his jaws splitting in a yawn as he got warmer, then cozier. His siblings were close, his mother was here. He could curl up nicely and things just sort of fell into place, forgetting all about whatever he had been busy with before the queen had given him a moment.

His eyelids got heavy, all ambushed by sleep. He didn't last much more than that.
