Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

First post for primrose! :D
Please let @Eirene reply first

At first, there was nothing—
Not a sound, Not a smell.

Cracking open hazy eyes swimming with water, they awoke to a joyous chorus echoing within their ears. A dream they perhaps had was fleeting, fading into the distant ends of their mind as quick as tears drying upon their face.
They stirred slowly, a frail ticking along their jaw as they moved to rest upon their back.

Angels wept. Birds sang.

In time the water faded, rolling back out to sea and giving way to a sky streaked with hues of gold. Unfamiliar it was, and reaching up a paw as if to touch the heavens they— no, he was met with nothing but a soft breeze.

Alone
He was alone.

Time passed over him in the form of shifting clouds. He did not know how long he waited, how long he laid there. It was only when the sun’s warmth faded that he stood up, shivering against the rolling wind and flattened grass along his frame. The spot they had awoken was nestled deep in the confines of a vibrant glade. This land was unfamiliar too.

A whine of uncertainty left his lips.

Who was he?
Where was he?

The sun had just begun to set on the horizon, and a beautiful ambient sky of roses and indigos pledged itself gloriously in the sky above the woman. Her face glimmering with the warm hues cut through the tall stalks of grass that pooled around her elbows, gracefully curving the mountain's edge.

She hadn't realized how much time had passed when the light changed from a soft golden to a hot amber. It was simply...so easy to lose herself staring at the heavens; she was often found doing so, praying to the Icelandic gods above.

Eirene was about to turn on her heel, back to a covered forest where she could be met with the soft undergrowth and chill of the evening night. She would meet such a climate with ambivalence, thinking that it was the God's way of keeping her on her toes.

But that was before she heard a small whimper from the glade; ears sharpening, pin-straight, tail upward. A most instinctive response to a mere cry, and Eirene needed to know where it was coming from.

She bustled through the bushes, nose to the ground. Maybe should find a scent; she shamelessly hoped she did. Something sweet pierced her nostrils and she only bolted further through the stalks of grass until she became so close she had to raise her head.

It was a wolf.

Hmm...they didn't exactly smell like any that she knew. She raised a curious brow, warmth prevailing as she whispered a soft coo: "Are you quite alright there?"

A blessing arrived in the form of another; A Woman tall and fair, a coat risen from the embers of a dying fire, or perhaps washed from cobbled stones of a deep-slate river.

He stared at her, brown eyes wide with misted wonder and mouth agape. Was this to be his gift? His saving grace?

"Munus ?" he whispered in a greeting, voice small and coated in sleep. The boy rose to stand on wobbled paws only to find the world slipped beneath him, sending him down towards the earth where he knocked his chin. As if in shock, the boy took a moment in silence to process before crying out in pain. He wailed, crystalline tears welling in the corners of his eyes.

Eirene heard the call back to her, a language foreign to her. She'd make herself more apparent, rising to her full height from the brush, looking curiously at the boy that stood by her feet. Her head cocked to the side, intrigue fueling her actions.

Where had the boy come from? Had he no mother?

Her questions would not be answered just yet. The young boy had rose to his own feet, wobbly as ever, falling to the ground without the grace or elegance that Eirene strove to have. She heard the way his jaw hit the ground, a rattling sound that sent her nerves on fire. The young one began to cry, hot tears of swelling salt falling to the ground. Eirene jumped into action, making haste to move closer to him. "Gods above..." She'd curse, swinging herself downward.

The woman would coo as she laid on the ground before him, nose lifting his chin from the ground if he let her do so, allowing his chin to rest atop her nose bridge. An abundance of 'shh's and 'You're alright,' echoed through the air, concern laid out fully so much that she almost choked on it herself.

"Where is your mother...?" She'd say to herself quietly, staring at his lean, tiny figure. He couldn't be more than a year— the poor thing couldn't even walk! Ears flattened against the base of her skull, she'd relax, pulling herself together for him. "Do you have a name, little one?" Maybe his family had the decency to name him.

A song of coos and gentle tidings surged over him, doing wonders to soothe the delicate boy, and in time his wails were replaced with quiet hiccups.

He moved towards her, pressing his cold quaking frame against her warm presence, rubbing his snout into her fur as a child would do to a cherished toy. The curse whispered moments before went by on deaf ears, and perhaps if he was older he would enquire about such a thing. But now all he sought was the comfort of this savior, this mother who cradled him as if he were her own offspring.

A name was asked by This Mother, and if it were not for the twitching of his ear maybe it too would seem to go unnoticed. Slowly, he turned to uncover his face from the damp fur, staring at the land around covered with flowers, a furrowed expression to match.  "P-P-Primrose," he stuttered.  "This one is named Primrose."

It was only calming to the woman to hear the soft cries from the child dissolve into the gentlest of hiccups. The soft humming and throttle of his chest caused her to lilt into a smile, to turn and look downward at his peach coloration.

The woman let the small boy move into the depths of her fur, seeking warmth and retribution after being out here for Gods' knows how long. It was simply not safe for children to be out here alone, unsupervised, especially in the colder parts of the mountains. He probably would've frozen to death if she weren't as so empathetic and soothing.

She would watch as he should himself from the depths of her thick fur, clearly snuggled and making himself a home there. He looked up at her with those big, wobbly eyes, and couldn't help herself but not to reach down and touch her nose with his.

"Primrose," she'd repeat, nose now travelling to the boys neck, nuzzling it lightly for encouragement. "That is a lovely name." Eirene would smile into his neck, reassuring that she was indeed there

"I am Eirene, little Rose. Are you...out here all alone?" She would attempt to ask, unsure if he would understand. He was quite young by the looks of it, distressed, and confused. She would be too.

This Mother was Eirene.

Primrose smiled at the name, noting that it truly fit such a beautiful creature as her. "Are you to be my mother?" He questioned, tilting his head back to look at her upside down, ear and cheek  squishing against her breast.  She didn't look like him, nor did she smell anything familiar, but primrose knew—he could swear that she was. Her fur smelled of something comforting, her voice light and breath warm around him.

"I don't remember...

Eirene's face dropped at his denotation of her being his bother— it was delusional, wasn't it? Eirene was not ready yet to be a mother. Without a pack, without a husband, she was entirely alone. There wasn't the slightest chance of her adopting such a little creature.

Breath caught in her throat, Eirene could only manage a few words, "I— I'm simply looking after you for a while, Primrose, until we find your mother, alright?" She would let the child continue to nuzzle his ay through her fur, regardless of the attachment that he was building. She needed to find someone, promptly, or else she would have a deeper responsibility on her hands.

"Are you hungry, Prim?"

Just as Eirene's face dropped, so too did Prim's. "Oh... Okay..," he swallowed thickly, head-turning around to survey the area. Perhaps he wasn't alone, perhaps his mother was close by. A wail slipped past his lips, shrill and quick just to make sure. Though he wasn't surprised when nothing echoed back. Ears pinned and brows pinching, the orphan looked up at Eirene as if he'd been kicked, mind slowly dawning on the idea that he did not have anyone. His heart sank, feeling heavy within his breast bone.

"I... think so?" He answered, looking to turn at his stomach as if expecting an answer. Primrose wasn't skinny by any means, he still had quite a big deal of puppy fat hanging about, but right now he felt downright empty in his head and gut. Nothing made sense to him— He couldn't remember anything, he couldn't really feel anything. It was almost as if he just gained sentience for the first time. "Are you?"

Primrose had made a sharp plea, a cry out into the vast plain. To no avail had his call been answered and Eirene felt her heart become a heavyweight in her chest as she became filled with dread. The woman knew that the child would have to come with her, at least for a while, but she would not endeavor for him to become dependent on her.

Not fully, anyway.

Still, she would quiet him with soft coos and affirmations.

His expression was read like an open book; a lost child, weeping, alone, eyes full of dread and water. It would be tenuous for her to abandon him, yet she would be lying to herself and the Gods if the thought had not crossed her mind.

The boys response had been a polite one, asking if she too had been ways with hunger. With a simple nod and light smile, she'd stand. With her nose, she'd nudge his rump to do the same, beginning to walk the path ahead. Her head churned to the side, beckoning him to follow her.

"Follow me," she'd utter, and began to sniff the air for anything sweet. Berries and simple seeds would do well since she was in no right mind to dare set foot onto a pack hunting ground.

Primrose stood with the help of Eirene's nudge. His paws, still feeling as if they were numb, were wiggled in an attempt to wake them up. "Um.. Coming!" He called back, tail wagging behind him like a banner. He would trot after his caretaker, practically glued to her legs at all times lest he dare lose her.

In an effort to not be awkward the boy would seek for something to talk about. "Wow there's so many trees!" He would begin. "Pine trees, oak trees, fig trees, maple trees, birch trees, willow trees...,Do you have a favorite tree, Eirene? I like them all!" Poor Eirene would have to listen to the incessant babbling of the boy the entire way.

Should we end here? :D

The warmth of Primrose's voice was refreshing for the woman. He sought solace in another, and if the Gods had propagated her at their will, she would not deny such a duty. Primrose would be the light that she needed, only for a little while.

The boy began to babble, but with her patient mannerisms, she'd dutifully answer each one with a soft voice. "I like Willow trees, Prim." She had to admit, she was fairly impressed with his knowledge. Eirene had did her fair share of studies of plants, but she's always still learning. She'd wonder where Prim had got such information.

Eirene would continue to wonder about his health; his food intake, feelings, hydration. Whenever he would tear up or cry, she'd be there to console him. She'd begun herself to form a bit of an attachment to the boy, but denied it as such.

With pleasure, she'd answer his questions. She almost thought he was testing her resillience— too bad for him.

ended here!
