Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

He’d arranged for a patrol, hunting mostly, but while they were out he figured they could rescent the borders and investigate rumors of a coyote on their southern border. They could hopefully either deal with it (things were made so much easier with the ability to talk to everyone) or warn everyone else of the danger if it were true. Towards that end, he’d gotten together two other cats. He’d spoken to them the night before and warned them of the impending sunhigh patrol the next day, as was his duty.

@”Emberfrost” had been pretty easy to locate but @”Edgewise” was a bit more difficult to pin down. Where was that fucker? Het sat on the inside of the entrance doors, stalk in his mouth as he looked around at the activities in the courtyard. He couldn’t see him. The large tomcat rolled his eyes then said to his companion, ”We’ll get a headstart on hunting, then. Edgewise can catch up to us later. Late fucker!” There was no real anger in his tone just mockingly so. They weren’t as strict as one of the clans he’d come from, so no “apprentice duties” as punishment for the other pointed cat.

With that, he’d lead the small patrol out the doors and into the fields. He’d go towards the lake first and quench his thirst, in between licks he’d casually say, ”So, you’re a good hunter, right? Wanna take the lead till Edgewise catches up?” Might as well let the better hunter do so. He wasn’t shabby himself but his forte was guarding and patrolling which wouldn’t be till a bit later.

It was a bit unusual for this clanlife, but most of it was relatively the same. The leader and the deputies, the roles and so and even the patrols. The only true difference was perhaps the lacking of true belief in StarClan, and the following of names she was all too used to. At the very least with dormant thoughts no longer causing an anguish, she was able to be at peace more inside of this.. Strange, towering of the fields. It was no forest, by far, but provided ample covering.

Very sturdy, that Emberfrost was rather pleased on WillowClans ways. She couldn't help but already find affection for it despite not being a birthplace.. Often in-between where others was, but lounging away in a peaceful sense. A laziness, took hold now that her head was free from the other.

She was called by the Deputy to join on, though it seemed someone was lacking behind. She knew of names, just not of general personalities yet. It was nice to remember those who are part of your own group, especially if it was one that continued to grow by the recruitment of others, and not by the usual bloodlines that most have. It did bring a wonder, to how the four clans were doing.

She smiled, "what are you in the mood to bring back?"

As per code rules, prey was brought back to be shared, and not to be ate by themselves.

In the distance, out of sight of the two hunting cats, a tiny brown head popped up over a wall. Its ears back and flat, teal eyes scanned the horizon. Failing to see what it wanted to see, it popped back down. A moment later, it ground-hogged up again from a tuft of grass, sneezing loudly as a wave of grass-seed invaded its nose. It popped down again. It sprinted through an open area as though vicious, hungry hawks were circling above (they weren’t), and then dashed up some broken stairs to suddenly halt at the top, looking left and right wildly. An ant dared to move near it’s left paw. It stomped on the ant, as this was all it’s fault (it wasn’t).

Where the hell are they?! the searching thing thought worriedly. Was supposed to meet up with them once I scouted out that room with the stuff. I had to meet them south of the thing, where there’s pee from He-Licks and Moosebellow by the other thing...

It turned suddenly, bonking its tiny brown head against a stone wall which absolutely was not there the whole time (it was). Damnit! Gotta find the thing, and then the thing!

He would take that as a "yes" and grinned at her. "Whatever the fuck you wanna grab. I'm sure no one back home is particularly picky. Food's fuckin' food, right?" He chuckled as he lifted his head and gave it a shake, scattering a few droplets that had collected around his whiskers and mouth when he'd been drinking.

He eased out his forelimbs and bowed down into a deep stretch. It was good to get everything loose before you went out to do strenuous things, right? He popped back up, flicking his tail and giving one last glance at the castle. He didn't --or rather, couldn't-- see the other tom and shook his head. Whelp, they had a scent trail and he was certain Edgewise could use his nose. Hopefully, maybe the tomcat would forget the entire thing. If so, he would never live it down! He'd get the ribbing of his life.

"Ready when you are!" He said. On reflex he opened his mouth, letting scents flood across as he tried to detect the prey that frequented the prairie. He would let her dictate where they went first, however.

She hummed for a moment in thought, while thinking what was around. She knew there was mice within the castle, but the time being their destination took the borders.. The plains were well known for hares in particular, and she smelled a few a while ago upon her own patrols, and even on the way to the destination. If they can catch a few, that would be a good treat.

"There are some rabbit holes on the edge," she said, as she whisked off in a running haste toward the direction.

Following his nose, Edgewise tracked his two clanmates down by scent. He had found the thing (the entrance doors), and had ran from there to the other thing (the grassy plains near the Keep). He was decently swift on his four feet, and caught up just as Moosebellow and a female feline were taking off. He got up to speed, ears peeled back in some semblance of aerodynamics.

When there was time to speak, he did so quietly ”Hey, sorry I’m late! Night Patrol ran long because I found the den of that coyote that’s been sneaking around!” He shook his head. ”She’s making her mark on the area; lots of hunting, really ranging far to kill whatever she can.” He took a second to breathe before continuing. ”Anyway, what’d I miss?”

The fiery she-cat seemed to be in thought for a moment after he'd asked his question. Moosebellow was content to let her think, they were in no particular rush. He even saw a butterfly drifting by lazily on the wind and he lifted a paw to lazily bat at it. What silly things.

Silly things that were fun to trap under your paws.

He didn't get a chance to do so though as Emberfrost was speaking again and before he could get an "okay" in, she was whisking away. Moosebellow bounded after her. "Slow the fuck down, asshole! Not everyone is as fast as a fuckin' hare around here!" There was no venom in his words, in fact, he sounded almost amused. He lagged behind her, a combination of letting her take the lead as well as being naturally slower. He was a bulky guy, not a fast guy. There was also the fact that Edgewise slipped in.

"There you are, you fuckin' lazy piece of mouse dung!" He would attempt to swat the other with his tail as they followed behind Emberfrost. But, what was this? He had an excuse! Well, not really an excuse, a very good piece of information and reason to be late. "Good work, I guess you're forgiven." He winked as though he had actually been considering doing something for his tardiness. He hadn't been but Edgewise didn't need to know that. He took a moment to take a breath as he was not made for running. "We'll discuss this with Quinn once we get back. For now, it's hunting time. We're heading to the rabbit holes. Emberfrost is heading the patrol because she's a good fuckin' hunter." They could hunt, bury the prey and then do a short walk of the borders before heading back.

With that, he flicked his tail towards the red she-cat, indicating to pay attention and to follow her lead as they neared.

"Ah, maybe there's too much weight dragging you down?" She looked back with blue eyes gazing up and down with a rather sly, and lazy smile. An indication whatever he was 'holding' was bringing him down to catch up to her. She wasn't slowing down in such joy though, as it had been so long since she felt the wind within her fur alongside of others, she unconsciously was picking up the pace.. Especially as the scent of rabbits were clearer by the seconds.

Ears flickering and nose to the sky, she could hear the faintest of thumping of rabbits within their tunnels ; either digging or otherwise. A scent heavily within the air, for surely some were ontop just for the making. With a few cats at the charge, and easy swipe to nip. She looked back once more to see Edgewise had joined and smiled lightly at him, not minding too much for being a late party as he ran alongside the cats itself. She, and thus along the rest of the party, showed no signs of slowing down.

"Head-first is more fun," she so dubbed while still directly heading to the rabbit mounds without a step into sneaking.

Edgewise nodded to Moosebellow as he ran, really getting his sprint on as they dashed to try to keep up with Emberfrost. The fall-colored feline was damned swift, and she had a head start to boot!
In due time, the hunting party neared the one of the largest clusters of rabbit warrens on the plains near Cymru Keep. The hilly space they arrived at was abundant with flora, particularly ferns and short-growing trees. The bright-green plants waved softly in the slow wind, drinking up the bright and warming sunlight, and their broad or curly leaves provided shade for all kinds of critters wiggling about in the undergrowth. Overhead, a beautiful blue kingfisher plucked dragonflies from the air, and a crested caracara, its face a striking red-orange, occasionally flew low to the ground in search of carrion it could snack on.

Among all this, the rabbits of the plains scampered. Wiggling noses sought the scent of predators and other rabbits, ears twitched or rotated to hear any incoming dangers, and legs hopped and bound to move them about their trails. This space was riddled with tiny hills and dirt-mounds, and nearly ever single such terrain feature had two or more rabbit-tunnels dug into it. Even if the hunting party botched one kill-attempt and the rabbits close enough to hear or smell them all scattered, the cats could easily run about a minute away and find an entirely undisturbed batch of fur-covered meals ready to be stalked.

Edgewise drew up next to Emberfrost, as the appointed patrol-head. ”What’s the game plan?” he asked, his grin audible in his voice.

Too much weight? ”Keep it up… and you’ll see how much fucking weight it is!” He panted out a reply although the good-humor was evident in his words. He liked people that could fuck around and he enjoyed fucking back.

In their run, Emberfrost showed no signs of slowing. Going forward until they made it to the warrens and still, she charged forward. Head-first. He could get behind that shit.

The crested the hills and burst right in. it seemed Edgewise wanted to wait and plan but Moosebellow whizzed right on past, attempting to bop him in the head with his tail as he did so. ”AIN’T NO PLAN! RUSH IN AND GRAB A FUCKIN’ RABBIT!” He bellowed, running in behind Emberfrost to ambush the panicking rabbits. There were screams and cries of a panic as the cats came in. Some bolted to their holes while others were quite unfortunate to be left out with the predators.

Moosebellow pounced on a slow one. It was large and tried to fight back but he was quick to subdue it with a bite to the throat and his superior size.
