Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

She was a rather pleasant mood, with dreams lighting her more bleak and nightmarish times. She either often dreamt of those under her terror or a man that could not be obtained, even within the dreamland he seemed to allude her in every way possible. It was laughable, really, that even in fantasy her desires would never come to fruit and instead the past would always continue to attack.

Though for one night was she blessed with a different scenery, granting her a more pleasant attitude for the next few days. She lay within the plains, enjoying time where the elk already departed and gave her comfort room of utter aloneness. The sun shined down, blessing her coat in a shimmer as the snow around glistened in a beauty.

When will winter end? Celnes wondered.

A cold sun sat high above the frosted expanse of plain. Barely lucid, she trekked on aching paws through a vaguely familiar biome. The echoes of familiarity reverberated in the crest of mountains to the north and the evidence of ungulates that had traveled in throngs across the dead, shivering grassland.

Gone now, she gazed up to see a lone figure on the bare horizon. Minthe's ears flickered, tail still. “I know you.”

A familiar scent hung in the air and yet clung to an unknown tragedy. It wrinkled her nose, destroying the small happiness she gathered onto the day and collected herself up ; preparing for the worst. Yet it wasn't something tragic or enemy on the move, much less what she thought was an association of death. The Queen's ears twitched and a smile fell upon her face, one of true sincerity of a warmth.

"My, Minthe, it has been a while," so long that Celnes children grew, "you seem.." The two held a toxicity within the air, venomous tongues that let the Queen feel a bit more homley and less of a snake in the grass with a more blunt of a tongue. Surely she had guessed by Celnes's words, that the other did not look.. Presentable, or well at the most.

"Alive."

The cold wit connected the necessary dots. “Queen Célnes.” She said, offering the ruler a minor dip of the head. A nymph grew up knowing her place among royalty, but that did not save her from the chafe of subordination.

“Some of us don't have the luxury of being waited on.” She replied.

She chuckled lightly, "I suppose that's true," though she had no true loyal servants, the Queen had the pleasure of not needing to hunt every other day. The caches were full and blessed, and she was safe within a forest without a worry of true survival. Blessed in life and in home ; just husbandless, she supposed.

"But I did say you are always welcomed here, and wouldn't need to have gone through such tough survival." There was no pity as she spoke to the other, more of just a 'told you so,' tone. How she would've loved if the other stayed but alas, she whisked away elsewhere never to be seen again.. Even if with white tears plagued her pelt, Celnes enjoyed her well-enough to ignore those factors. Their mutual dislike over a certain golden individual gave a kinling to Minthe.

“I don't work well with others.” A trait that had bitten her in the ass a time or two. But as enticing as a support system seemed, a safety net could only be held up with strings. Minthe didn't do well when tethered.

A cold wind buffeted her auburn fur and she shivered despite the sun overhead, a mere fixture in the sky as Winter gripped tight to the land, reluctant to give up its hold to Spring. “How have you and yours fared?”

"What a shame, for our forest provides a warm cover and plentiful food for winter." Perhaps a bragging and a lure, for the other always seemed reluctant to join. What a shame, she continued to think, for wasted potential was reduced to such.. Rags, as they were frail to the boot and looked to need a mouse just to live for the day. Though, the Queen was heartless — she didn't offer any meals for the others consistent refusal of her generous paw.

"All is well, how were your travels?" A smile to her face, as she asked the other. Where had they gone to end up like they currently are?

“Hard.” She replied, seeing no reason to be dishonest. Minthe had a rare and ruthless talent for burning bridges, a match clutched between her fingers ready to set the timbers of acquaintance and friendship ablaze. She'd weathered the consequences of such impulsive behavior, and so the female dipped her head again, pulling the spark back from the railing.

“I will consider your offer more thoroughly this time. I appreciate your willingness to welcome me into your home.” Polite, not contrite.

"The life of a loner is never easy, even the most experience wolves, have extreme troubles during the winter." There was a pity, as her smile sighed lightly as it seemed the other realized the extent of her attitude was getting. Though Celnes couldn't say she wouldn't be the same.. Enjoying her title as Queen, as a ruler, she wouldn't easy be persuaded to join under someone elses reign unless she knew for certain, a take-over was possible.

"You are welcome to stay within the forest to recuperate," the woman offered, as now the ploy that she would consider had finally arrived, she was more.. Nice, to the touch of lending an aid. She was too pleased the other finally gave in with a more consideration and voiced it as so, "though there are rules.. Such as we do not hunt elk or deer in our land." Perhaps then can lure her to the Elkshires side.

Some part of it was simply nice knowing an acquaintance of the enemies across the door would be within her paw was too satisfying to give up, even if in truth, she enjoyed Minthe's company. Gossip was too splendid to give away the chance.

Minthe flashed the queen a rueful smile, huffing out a tired laugh. “I couldn't catch one if I tried.” She said, turning to stare out at the land that had once been filled with grazing beasts. She was sure they would return. “Thank you for your hospitality, Célnes.” A refuge, a raft to cling to in the torrent of the life she'd made.

"They are holy for a reason," she said in a slight jest as she laughed lightly at so. Difficult fauna, to truly hunt. Especially the horned ones who were forever sacred to the Deorwine family, a crown upon their head that is cherished ; a relic, to be seen as a tool to communicate with He, who the wolves cannot. She always wondered if that were the truth or not, and if the Elk and Deer also communicated with He. But she knew, not all of them knew about God's name.. Almost as it was lost, to them.

The High Elk would not be lost to her family.

"You are free to take from the cache, but do fill it up once you are well." Kindness to offer and but the mortality of measly prey to gain a lifelong trust in that hope — as the Queen so devised her plan to keep the other within. A few prey can be spared, and though she could imagine.. A disgruntled guard, it would do be fine if it was her own share that contributed. Not as if he cared, though.

Celnes doubted, that the Minthe before her could even catch a mouse.

A place of refuge could be checked as the tidings of a noble samaritan, proud to share in their bounty. The offer of food was enough to make the auburn she-wolf's ears twitch.

Though their previous meeting had been brief, Minthe felt as though the great elk queen did not extend one hand without a contract clasped in the other.

“Is there anything you want in return for such goodwill?”

"A consideration to stay, within this forest." Simple in fact of the truth as her smile was of a cresent moon. Offer such a grace, all for the risk of the other to possibly, join. But Celnes knew she wouldn't lose either way, for even if the other didn't stay.. She was within a good grace, and spread of the good deeds of Elkshire. Bring in more wolves, hearing of the good they would do. (Despite, in truth, many wolves saying stay away from the south, but she didn't know that).

When the consideration of membership seemed to be the only string, Minthe nodded, bowing her head to the queen once more. “I won't forget this. Thank you, Célnes.” Gathering herself and her pride, she walked away from the regal wolf, forcing herself to put weight on paws that ached to be spared, hiding her limp, doing her best to mask her weakness.

It couldn't be denied some part was within.. Petty reasoning. Thinking she could take away one of their wolves, from across the plains. A rather good reasoning to think she wouldn't lose, for gaining would give her all the pleasure to know what she had stolen, and losing.. Was still within a good grace, and spreading of the word of what they may be. But Minthe wouldn't need to know about any of her reasonings.

A smile to her face, even when Minthe departed and she continued, feeling satisfied in the plains. Resting her head back onto her paws, and enjoying the sun.
