Vera

"A starving child
An armored girl
Underwater, full of evil thoughts..."

@Gyrfalcon
Patrolling, that is how she spent her day. Searching high and low for the slightest indicator of malicious intent. With each day it felt like she was pushing herself more and more. She should have been sleeping last night but instead she went out to hunt for something. Sure she was slow and fighting was her specialty, but as a youth she had been training to be a hunter and survival meant knowing how to feed yourself for the most part. She had been successful too. It was no reindeer or ox, but a decent-sized mountain goat. With terrifying strength, she dragged the goat by its head, easily moving it towards depths of the pack. This could feed two, maybe three wolves, and the thought of making the lives of three wolves a little easier made her feel all the bumps, scrapes, and lack of sleep was worth it. In her birth-pack food was very hard to come by. Hunger was a dear friend there...

Maybe she was starting to push herself too hard, but the terrifying fire was still lit in her amber eye. Hinting of the turmoil beneath. She had to admit it now, she was blaming herself for the illness spreading to camp. Working harder as a form of punishment and to make amends for her cursed presence. Negative thoughts began to fill her like an ongoing wave.

She stopped as she noticed another packmember. It was a little hard to make out their colors, but her night vision allowed her to easily make-out the wolf. It looked like a female, and as usual, they were much more pretty than her. She didn't really know where to bring this goat anyways since hunting wasn't her forte. Maybe she was a little hungry or at least she could tell or show Vera where to put it. Hoping that the darkness hid her hideous face and scars, she called out to the other, "Excuse me Miss. The name is Vera, can I ask for your assistance or opinion momentarily. I'm new and still getting the hang of this all." She called out and asked. Briefly she wondered if the other would run, she was exhausted, covered in blood and scars, and had steam coming out the sides of her mouth like some sort of hell spawn. 'Oh night, please shield me' she thought.

This place was in one word: beautiful. Despite the fact that it was a bit chillier than she liked --something that she was sure to grow used to in the coming months-- she was more than happy to stay here with all of the beauty. While she stayed here, she tried to make herself busy and not a burden. Hunting and scouting was her forte so she put herself to work doing those tasks. In fact, she'd just gotten back not too long ago from patrolling the grounds in a late-night scout. Her lean legs carried her quickly and easily around the borders and then back to the territory. While she was out, she'd even managed to snag herself a mouse. Tiny but an apt snack. In the morning she would have something more substantial or maybe she'd take a few of the others out to go hunting... hmm...

Her ears twitched towards the sound and scraping and dragging, to which she turned her head and saw a massive wolf. She squinted, trying to decipher male or female but it wasn't immediately obvious. Not that it mattered. What did matter was that huuuuuge piece of prey they carried!

Under the dim light of the moon she could see that the wolf was white, like many of the residents here. Their fur looked marked with many scars from what she could tell, anyway, it was awful dark. That too, didn't matter. Gyrfalcon always thought that scars looked sick. She always admired wolves with that tough look to them, she could never pull it off so she always thought it was awesome when others could.

The other wolf called to her and from that she gauged that this wolf was fairly formal and seemingly charming. Gyrfalcon smiled and padded over. "My assistance and opinion shall be freely given! Although I should warn you that I'm fairly new as well." She said with one of those contagious smiles. "Name's Gyrfalcon, by the way! Nice t'meet you, Vera." And then she waited and realized from the scent that wafted that this was likely a female. A very freaking cool looking female. Man, when would she get some awesome scars like that?

Vera found herself thinking the other was bold as she showed a friendly expression and walked on up to her, a beast of death. This wolf was either trusting or confident in her abilities. Momentarily she found her older train-of-thought using her brain. Calculating ways to fight, ensuring her that even if the wolf was confident in their abilities, she was no match to Vera. She found herself quickly pushing back such thoughts. These were her packmates now, so open trust was to be expected, was what she herself should be embracing.

The other wolf saved her from herself as she started talking. Gyrfalcon, such a strange name to her like many of the other names here. Except for different reasons. It was the name of a bird she recognized from her previous world, far up north. Albeit they were not in her sub-pack area, but another one she did not visit all too often. Even during those visits the encounters were sparse, only spotting them pecking away at open wolf carcasses at a few of the body dumping/storing spots she knew. Normally it was typical scavenging birds you would encounter but no one likes to pass a free meal. Geez, it never felt like such a dark chapter of her life until she encountered with those bathed in the light.

Unlike the gruesome scenes she would find such birds about, this falcon was in a much brighter place with a far less ominous energy, quite cute if in fact! Her positivity was so bright that even Vera couldn't stop the slight smile of scarred tissue. She wondered what the other was doing up so late, was she a scout? "Ah, it is nice to know I am not the only new one. Two heads are better than one, yes?" She said with a small laugh and playful wink that leaned more towards the flirting side.

She then proceeded to lightly kick the goat corpse. "Do you know where-wwwhhhyy are you staring at me like that?" Vera's sentence quickly changed it's course as she caught on to the look that Gyrfalcon was giving her and decided to call out on. If it was brighter, she would have caught on to the fact that it was just admiration, but the darkness and exhaustion dulled her senses, causing her to be wary from experience. The way she phrased it was more curious than upset though, merely trying to figure out the other. "Got something on my face?" She added the joke that was an obvious swing at her appearance just to try and fish out from her if it was once again the normal kind of reaction she was use to getting from others.

Ah-ha! Was that the beginning of a smile she could see on that scarred visage? Huzzah! No one could escape the confines of her patented Gyrfalcon Smile™️! What's more, it earned her a wink. Was that the flirting kind? Hmm... "My thoughts exactly. Even if those two heads are both greener than a jealous frog." A small, bright laugh at her own joke. Oh jeez, hopefully that wasn't too lame and she lost all interest of the other party. Maybe she'd decide to find someone else with less jokes...

 Hah! As if.

"Do you know where-wwwhhhyy are you staring at me like that?" Hu-? Gyrfalcon blinked, not realizing how noticeable her awe-inspired staring might be. Whoops! If had no fur on her face, one might notice blush on her cheeks and ears. Then, the woman gave her a way out. Of course, Gyr could have just admitted why she was staring... but where was the fun in that? "Why! You sure do! It's right there!" She reached a paw up and pointed at the woman's nose. Her eyes seemed quite serious for a moment, as if there really was something there beyond a nose.

Hopefully, this would go over well and not just blow up in her face.

Vera didn't mind her jokes at all. It was nice to find others who wanted to share their humor. Laughter was a powerful force. She was impressed as Gyrfalcon admitted that she did have something on her face, assuming that the other was just being blunt. She would not push on it or try to react to that, but it did leave an inward sting. Secretly her appearance did bother her greatly, but she did asked for the response with how she put it out there so her fault.

Yet Vera could not have predicted in all of her wildest dreams that the other would reach for her. She could catch sight of the serious expression, mesh that with the sudden movement and Vera found herself a victim to instincts. It was habitual from all the sudden fights that would break out from 'friends' assignations attempts and infiltrators. Self-defense, but was it really when you were as strong and large as Vera?

In a flash with a blood-curdling snarl, as if her leisure-self never had existed, she turned into a demon of the snow, of broken dreams that she was known for. Her jaws snapping to entrap the paw that had gone for her face. Vera was stuck in the past now with her fleeting thoughts. She knew this paw was to scratch her nose, to startle her so she could get the upper-hand, perhaps a poison laid upon her fangs.

Vera pressed down hard, was that the crunching of bones or just the sound of her fangs digging through flesh, awareness of any now fading as she begun to shake the paw back and forth, causing herself to stretch the leg and drag Gyrfalcon from side-to-side. She was determined to shake until the leg was ripped clean off, just like the other times. One would never want to know a monster. This was the malicious bloodlust that always festered.

Perhaps this was what her father meant when he said she should start taking things more seriously. Or when he'd said she should think about possible consequences of her actions. In any case it was far too late to take back what had happened.

Gyrfalcon had been angling for a silly joke but what she got in return was decimation.

The other wolf snapped her jaws down on her arm and paw. Hard. It hurt like hell and Gyrfalcon could feel the blood oozing out. It all felt like a dream almost. Like it was happening in slow motion to someone else... But no. That was her paw latched on the behemoth's jaws. She could really appreciate the muscles now that they were being used to jank her arm out of socket.

Was that a laugh? Screaming? Or crying that had gone out if her throat? Maybe a combination of all three. Gyr couldn't tell. What she'd meant to say was done lane joke about having her leg trapped by a bear but it was just that strangled, horrifying cry of pain instead.

Oops.

Surely if she made this out as a joke that's what it would be right? Right?

No.

She was yanked off her paws, her paw mangled in the other wolf's naw as she finally snapped back i to herself with the horrifying pain. She screeched and screamed for the heart toet go of her. Gyr was no fighter, she was a runner and in her panic she attempted to twist away... But the white Wolf was not letting go.

Perhaps her leg wouldn't come away with her but she would attempt to fly away anyway as she bellowed out for help in a shrill panicked voice. Anyone, someone?

She was going to lose her leg!!

some light pp as discussed in the shiroshika chat <3

^^

There was not a time where Tiberius saw a pack member turn their teeth and claws on their own, not in Shiroshika. Perhaps his past, where they were filled with feisty wolves known to draw blood first and perhaps, maybe, if they were lucky -- to ask questions later. Tiberius had thought that perhaps Reiko had cultivated creatures who were more civilised than what he was used to, hence him never needing to turn his own skills on wolves who he sought to protect and help. Yet today, today would mark the change in his new life, history in the making, where things would change. Patrolling, as per usual, Tiberius had been winding down when he heard it.

Certainly on the wind he had smelt Vera and a woman he had not yet met, but he hadn't thought that later, he would hear the shriek. The plea for help, the curdling sound of pain and desperation. Everything in Tiberius stilled for a moment as he tried to pin point it and moments later with erect ears, the beast lurched forward on thick paws. Vera and the nameless woman, it had to be yet it didn't sound like something that would come from the scarred woman in white. Had Vera gone to aid the woman and was having a hard time? The wind didn't carry an intruder, no sign of another predator but Tiberius couldn't have imagined the scene that he had rushed to.

Fury, unbridled fury coursed through his veins as he watched the scene on his approach, Vera with her mouth around the leg of the woman and shaking it like she was a deer, waiting to be ripped open. "Vera!" Tiberius thundered, his voice laced with thunder as he came crashing forward. Reiko, quite frankly, was not going to like this. He had yet to see the Iceling lose her mind but he thought that this was likely a very good way to cause her to bloom into a flower covered in thorns instead of sashaying in the wind as a mere delicate petal. Tiberius thought he should have seen it, should have seen the signs in Vera for her aggression when they had met yet he had not and he had left a defenseless woman open for a world of pain.

Whatever had caused Vera to switch was of no importance to the beast. What mattered was her turning her fangs on one of their own and for that, Tiberius could see no way of redeeming her. It was unlikely that Reiko would allow him to gift the damaged woman a new bed lining in the form of a splayed out Vera, but Tiberius could imagine it as he barreled towards her with a warning, "let go," though he didn't give her much time to comply -- doubtful that she would, given how adamantly she was throwing the leg around -- for he tore forward and snatched her scruff between his waiting jaws. Skin and fur, he didn't give a fuck what he grabbed so long as he had a hold of her and with intent, fury and pure irritation, the man thrashed his own frame to bring her away from the squealing woman. Where possible, he would not seek to let go of Vera but he would try and direct her away from her victim.

If he drew blood, then, well deserved, he thought. ^^

The other screamed, wanting to be freed from her clutches, only causing Vera to bite and shake with even more vigor. She sounded so far away, her vision changed as it became sharper from traumatic stress. Something far far in the back of her mind questioned this. Yet it was a tiny pebble sinking into the ocean of red that was her bloodlust. In her old pack it was a sin to kill. Often the loophole of self-defense was used when it happened, but it was usually the instigator/victor who got to decide which part was of self-defense. And when Vera's brother became the leader and Messiah, killing became truly natural. It was warped into a holy war, killing for the gods and so damnation was never a fear because her brother would take on all those sins with him when he died. She...she had been one of his biggest supporters and she always felt bad for doubting that...but in moments like these, she could not see how she would ever be forgiven or pardon from her actions.

So focused was she, when Tiberius arrived she did not notice, did not hear him call her. Something collided into her but she still held on, refused to open her maw, barely being able to feel the pain inflicted from opposing fangs as she was now being shook as well. Right now in her mind it must have just been reinforcements. Finish the one in front off first. But the strength of the other finally gave a hard enough yank to cause her body to shift over to the goat carcass besides them, causing her to trip. If it hadn't been on her blind side Vera would likely have been able to stand over or regain her balance, truly the leg might have been ripped off then. The fall made her let go of the other finally, crimson droplets flailing about from the sudden separation and momentum. The shape of the entire leg had been altered as it moved away and was able to withdraw back to it's host.

Vera tried to get up, to prepare for the next onslaught but the weight of the other was upon her, preventing her from finishing the job. His scent was familiar, starting to bring her back to her senses, slightly, which was causing confusion now. She felt like she was suppose to kill and yet not at the same time. She tried to get up to shove him away, managing after a few attempts to scoot backwards and get her hind-legs under her, now on the defensive as she snarled up at Tiberius. Wait, Tiberius?

Through cloudy lens, the fog started to lift as she saw a familiar face. Nothing was normal yet, but everything was starting to get louder and more clear, who was that screaming? Why was the smell of blood so strong? She realized she had her teeth bared at the other and immediately closed them as she cowered away, the fear and adrenaline coursing through her from the previous bewilderment of her attack. Something was sobbing in the background behind him..."Ti....ber..." She still didn't have enough control to say his name...she just stared doe-eyed at him, large form shaking as she was trying to pick up the pieces of the last few minutes.

She screamed, her leg in utter agony as it was ripped into like a piece of meat. That's what it was, wasn't it? Meat. That's what it felt like as she desperately pulled.

Would no one come? Would she be killed? Fate was a funny beast, wasn't it?

Soon though, salvation came. If one could call it that ...

There was no one to delicately pry her leg free, to save it. No. A dark shape, out of focus and barely registered to the pleading falcon barreled into view. It barreled into her assailant but it only caused another wave of agony as the beast ripped again. Even as the white Wolf stumbled and finally let go, it caused waves of pain like a rolling tide.

But she was free.

Run. RUN!

Her mind screamed. She was desperate to comply.

She took two steps over the snow, body trembling and blood pouring from the leg.

She could move no further and collapsed into a sobbing heap.

Did she dare look?

The woman's gaze traveled to her right leg, where relentless wave after relentless wave of pain crashed over her.

Leg.

That was a funny way to describe what she was looking at.

What used to be her leg was now just a mangled heap of flesh. Fur has all been torn off, most of the skin had as well until sinew and muscle were exposed to the air. Bone was splintered and broken. The leg itself lay in the snow at an unnatural angle, barely attached with a sorry excuse of tendon.

This was hers.

This was her pain, her body.

Gyrfalcon let out a bloodcurdling scream at the grisly site.

Then, with the amount of blood that stained the ground beneath her and the once-limb, she fainted with a flop in the snow beneath her.

On the way down she could swear that she saw her old man, standing above her with a disappointed expression. His words stung in her ears with a new sharpness.

I told you this would happen... Do you believe me now?

And everything went black.

^^
Her day had started like any other. The Empress had travelled to the glacier gardens to tend to her herbs and bring back the dried ones back to Tsukiishi. It was always her favourite time to spend the mornings organizing the medicine den, throwing out any that were close to rotting, keeping track of what might need replacing or replenishing. The morning was starting off just as any other, quiet, relaxing - the winter birds were chirping in the trees above —

And a distant scream shook her to her core.

The sound travelled up her spine, electrifying her body to snap into action. Moving immediately toward the sound with haste as her lithe body cut through the snow with ease. What she found was not what she anticipated...

It wasn't something she would have ever wanted to see.

There the Empress stood as eyes took in the sight - Tiberius had already beat her here, or was he the culprit? It was hard to tell...

Blood stained the pale snow, heavily around Gyrfalcon the most as obviously her leg was missing. Thrown somewhere around Vera and Tiberius who were occupied with one another. It all came crashing down in seconds as she only stood to watch the scene for a moment before moving in on Gyrfalcon who had lost consciousness...

At least she hoped.

Holding her own breath, pressing her ear to the woman's chest to listen for life. The moment a few shaken heart beats alerted her to Gyrfalcon's state, she immediately began to burry the injured stump in snow to slow the bleeding. If they had one benefit of being in colder climate, was that bleeding out was not a common death.

Occupying herself with herself with Gyrfalcon, pushing more snow to replace what was being melted with the crimson liquid until eventually it would cease - they didn't really have to worry about frostbite on the stump after all... at least it would stop the bleeding. Pressing her paws against the wounded woman's new snow mound - only now did she focus her attention on the two guardians. Eyes lit with both shock, pain, and deceit at what she had found. “Somebody explain to me what has happened.”

The injured girl was lost on Tiberius for the moment, as his body crashed into Vera with little to no fight from the white-wolf. Together they moved, Tiberius ending up in a position to loom over Vera as she came out from her cloud of... insanity. She bared her teeth to him and Tiberius wasted no time in curling his marred lips down at her, snarling in warning to the woman before she decided to try her luck with him. She would not have as easy as a time removing his limbs as she had with the girl but Gods, a little part of him hoped she would try so that he could put down the woman like the animal she had made herself out to be. She shifted suddenly, her features changing as if the reality of it all dawned on her and below him, she cowered. Tiberius did not let up and he did not move, standing vigil before her with every muscle in his body bunched and ready to go.

Vera was shaking, staring up at him with eyes reminiscent of a doe and he wanted to laugh; she was as far from a doe as one could be. He blamed Reiko for her influences upon him as he felt a sliver of pity for Vera as she shook, like a leaf in the wind. He had to remind himself that no, she had just cast her teeth and her claws upon a Pack mate who was so clearly below Vera in skill set that it was appalling. "Nah," he snapped furiously, "ya stay quiet," Tiberius demanded, his instinct telling him to gut her there and then.

It was soon that Reiko made an appearance, Tiberius' ears twitching to her movements as she went to check on the girl that Vera had mauled. She stood, applying pressure to the girl and cast her questions upon the duo and Tiberius felt his hackles go up; was that accusation in her tone? No, he thought, she was just wondering what was going on. "Ya guess is as good as mine," he rumbled, keeping his fiery gaze upon Vera. This wasn't the Dominion, Reiko wasn't going to ask for Vera's life. He shifted on his paws ever so slightly, the thirst for death on his throat, his tongue sliding from behind his teeth and purposefully, he made eye contact with Vera as he slid his tongue across his teeth. "Go on, Vera, I'll letcha talk," Tiberius cooed, his nose flaring as he dared her to make excuses.

Never mind what Reiko would think, should the wolf go back into a frenzy -- Tiberius would wear her like a second skin by night fall. ^^

There was so much happening. As Tiberius told her to be quiet she did just that, her mind getting sharper and sharper until the ugly truth could not be hidden away any longer. She shifted, just enough to peak over his shoulder. If she had been shorter the feat would have been impossible. The sun was beginning to peak out, and in it's gentle light was bathed a mess of red snow and missing fur. A falcon that had been grounded, leg sprawled a few feet away from the body, allowing her to guess it came off when she struggled away, the few remaining tendons having snapped. Reiko was there, like a silent ghost, trying to stop the bleeding. The scene was outrageous, she could almost laugh. But the smell of Gyrfalcon, her smell was all over herself, she could taste it among all the iron in her mouth. Oh gods no, no nonononono-please.

Her first instinct was to rush over and help, but Tiberius was blocking the way and she dared not to struggle past him. What had she done? No, she knew what had happened. The beast she was, it couldn't have been that long judging from the sun but...this malicious fire she felt inside had slipped. The side of her that wanted to break dreams. Vera believed she was one of the few good things left in the world which was nothing but a den of evil. And yet it was an excuse she had used against others for being wronged. What she had thought to allow her to have smashed her surprised brother's head into the pavement again and again as he twitched and sobbed. It was not her, she was never in the wrong. She had done bad things but it was from circumstances, not herself. Now that she had a chance to start over with love and light everywhere, things would be better she thought. She was fixed. If that was true... then why did a wolf she felt like she was getting along with now laid on the ground missing their whole fucking leg?! She remembered feeling weary as the other got closer and closer, but you don't rip off their entire fucking leg because of that. She knew now at this moment that herself had been the problem all along.

She choked on a sob, biting her tongue until it bled, looking only at Gyrfalcon, she didn't have the courage to look at the others. Her body was numb, she felt like she was going to be sick. As Reiko turned to look at them her eyes finally drifted to the leader, the expression itself hurt more than her fangs clamping upon her own tongue. She had failed her, she allowed herself to start over and she spat and trampled on that hospitality.

Vera found herself looking down at the ground now, one giant paw upon her nose, clenching it hard and sliding down, causing blood to spill out as the nails dug in. During this process she heard Tiberius spoke. The spotlight was on her now, she could feel her own breathing pick up. She avoided it first off and was amazed that sound came out of her mouth and formed words. She sounded tired, defeated. "I do not know if you do this here, but afterwards a tourniquet might be of use. Animal intestines can work, though I do not know if the goat's over here are strong enough." She was wincing internally, feeling like a jackass for just answering with advice on a situation she caused and others were fixing. She put both her front paws upon her face as she balanced and sat on her hind-legs still. It was the manner similar to that of a human scratching their face in distress, though her claws caused deep lacerations compared to that of human finger nails. She used that moment to gather her courage and come forth.

"It was me, I accidentally ripped off her leg-I-I'm sorry...I was startled." She started off, knowing how ridiculous the sentence must have sounded. As she proceeded to say more, tears would form with more intensity, mixing with the blood from the lacerations she just caused. "I..." She had to be honest. "I don't know why I did what I have done. I don't know why...I think there is something really wrong with me." She found herself succumbing to the ground with an extremely low bow of sorts as her shaking grew. "Please kill me! I told you from the beginning Reiko, that I was a monster. But I thought I was better than this-this hot anger, I feel it always. Kill me now before it gets worse, KILL ME." She was getting hysterical now as she begged for the end of her life. Her normally lovely voice was twisted and shrilled from crying and hysteria, shock. It was pathetic, disturbing.

She had nothing left, no honor, no salvation. It was not all for them, she wanted to run away from this scene, her guilt. Burn and hide in the flames of hell from all of this.

^^
It would take a while for the bleeding to stop, but she was confident it would in time. With the help of the snow she loved so much, stained a deep crimson - a sight that would be hard to forget after today. How she felt as though she had failed to keep Gyrfalcon safe. To keep everyone safe within her walls.

It was hard to decide on what was the best way to feel in the moment as many emotions battled for dominance. Sorrow, embarrassment, shame, anger - they all wanted to be in the forefront of her feelings. Tiberus' answer didn't help to decide on that either as confusion only rose further. The flurry of emotions brought her guard hairs to rise defensively, breathing life into themselves as if they themselves wished to protect the empress from her haunting thoughts.

A flash of teeth - a memory of a time before, the same red staining not snow but green grasses with the sight of distant mountains all around. A pain in her neck —

It sent shivers down her spine, fear in her eyes. Snapping back to the reality at hand with blood on her paws as she desperately kept trying to slow the bleeding. It stained her paws a grotesque colour, one she was almost certain could never be truly washed off. This was somehow her fault after all.

“I have heard enough.” Her soft voice cut through Vera's words near the end - cold, sharp like the ice in a dry cold January night. “Tiberius you are to watch over Vera from now on until a decision is made for her future here in Shiroshika. In the meantime, can you please find @Antares and bring him here?” After all, Gyrfalcon's life was more of a priority now. So long as Vera was watched over by someone capable - such as Tiberius - they can focus on stabilizing Gyrfalcon.

And like that, she dismissed them without another word.
