Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Timed one week after the camp was discovered

Had a week and some already passed since they had discovered this place?

The freckled man lay under his tree, back pressed against the rough bark. He had begun to dig out a den under the roots of the tree, praying to some unknown entity that his progress would not inevitably cause the tree to fall, tumbling down the hill and crushing those he was determined to protect. So far, there was a hole he could climb into and turn around in, but it was not especially effective at keeping out rain, he'd found after one disappointing night. Trying to remember the tunnels his mother had dug out on her own hill served him well enough, but there were glaring gaps in his knowledge that he had been struggling with.

The birds would not let him forget that it was now morning and the sun was rising. They called out to him, laughing at his pitiful nest. He couldn't understand their dialects, but he knew they were mocking his nest skills. He assumed that most birds just could not understand the need for burrowing. Nevertheless, their mockery was irritating and he looked up at them with a grimace. No. They were too far up to reach and they knew it.

Rising with a sigh, he began to circle the tree, inspecting the earth below it. He considered different options, different angles of approach. If he came at it from the far-side of the hill, opposite to the rest of the camp, he might be able to angle it so the rain would flow out instead of in. However, it would mean having to dig a tunnel to open out towards the rest of the camp. After all, he had to be approachable and having a den facing away from everyone would not be the most comforting for the rest of the pack.

He considered the Rearing Cave that he and Mordecai had discovered.

If he moved the entrance so that it was still under the roots of the tree but dug down further before moving up and into the den, perhaps the water would collect and soak into the hole. He pondered this idea for a moment longer before selecting a spot and beginning to dig with earnest. It would likely take him several days, but if this soil was amenable and the tree continued to provide support from above, he supposed he could try to dig a fairly deep den with an internal chamber of sorts.

For this den, he had to consider many things. He figured that any mates he had would like to den with him at least some of the time, though he was sure they would want their own space. He could always dig out more, so perhaps instead a central chamber and then other denning caves off of that. It was a large-scale project, for a wolf, but he was sure that he could make something work. If he were to find a mate, perhaps they, too, would want to help with the clearing.

Ah, that was another issue. He climbed out of his growing hole and began scraping away the dirt that had begun to build up outside of the hole. He would need to climb in and out and continue clearing away from this hole so that he didn't end up burying himself into the dirt and suffocating.

 Cause of Death: Stupidity.

Worn out and dirty, he sighed and turned from his project to head down the hill and have a swim to wash off. Who knew, perhaps he could snag a beaver for breakfast while he was at it.
