Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

The matriarch scoured Stone Mountain once more. It seemed this place had found many, now; she recollected the first time she had encountered the stout place, and despite it being full of trees and wildlife it had been barren of scents of her own kind. Now, though, that had changed; it ignited some semblance of hope in her to come across a trail she might recognize. Thoughtfully, Hydra lifted her head to call to any who might recognize her voice through alerting them of her own presence: I am here. The world quieted around her for a moment, and Hydra pressed ahead, none too worried about anyone else that would surely have heard her. Perhaps they themselves might have answers to provide...

And if they only wished to give her trouble—well, they still would need to answer to her... though they were less likely to enjoy the way in which they would come to do so. Unless they were a masochist. They would just enjoy themselves to their last breath, and then they could rest knowing they would never reach such gratification again. Hydra could be quite the giver, when she wished.

Licking her chops, she sniffed at the roots of a tree. No scent she recognized there, which was unfortunate, but she was a patient woman and the day was young yet. One way or another, she was certain she would find something of interest.

Crux is in Bleakwood

Early mornings were one of Crux's favourite times of day here in the mythical forest of Bleakwood. The red trees never ceased to amaze him, though he was starting to fall into a rhythm in his new home with his new friends. Pack life seemed to draw itself to him and though they had no name or assignments yet, not even a true claim to the territory as they explored it, he found himself at home here. He was spending this particular morning out in the woods to the south of the home island, inspecting a rabbit burrow. He'd noticed the young mother scurrying away from the burrow earlier and after some time, had approached it to see what it was all about. Inside the nest he found a handful of tiny rabbits. Morsels for many, but he looked on them in curiosity. Elsewhere, they would have frozen. Here, in this strange forest... they were fine.

And they would be fine another day, as his attention was drawn by a distant howl. He tilted his head, listening to the call and trying to pinpoint its direction. Far way, up the mountain? No, even further. Near that mountain that he had met the young male who had called them mad. He trotted towards the sound, then thought again. Lifting his head, he let out his own call: “Who are you?”

Hydra was given pause when she heard the call of another. It was no voice she recognized, and the matriarch gave a cursory look at her surroundings. He had answered her call with a question of his own, and hearing no other voices... well, she could adjust her route and investigate in the direction he had called from. Loosing a howl in turn, she only said in answer: I am coming. He would find out soon enough; her long-legged strides carried her through the shadowed forest. Hydra was not swift in her journey; she inspected trails along the way, wanting to discern whether or not her family had ever passed through this leg of the mountain. But she headed toward the one who had called to her, slowly but surely.

Discovery for Bleakwood: Telling the name of the place.

Well, if she was coming, she might as well know where she was coming to. He wasn't sure about this, but he was curious beyond belief. So up his voice went ahead in another howl: “Bleakwood, the red forest.” She'd recognize it the moment she saw it from that brief description, he was certain. In the meantime, he began to head towards the border of the woods, hastening to make his marks on red-leaved trees as he went. She sounded powerful and confident enough to call, so he might as well make the place comfortable for the visitor. “I'll be waiting.”
