Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Maz wasn’t quite sure how she’d gotten here. That bastard Atticus had said something - she could hardly remember what - and she had stormed off in a fury.

Just because she was his betrothed didn’t mean he could speak to her like that. She hadn’t wanted him in the first place - her parents had insisted, citing her aging as reason to settle in spite of their low class. It wasn’t like she’d had much of a choice in the matter.

Maz snarled to herself as she trudged along, bristling and furious as she often was after speaking with Atticus.

“Fucking asshole,” the woman hissed, shoving through a dense bit of shrubbery that she knew led to her favorite place to unwind, where no one would find her-

-except… it wasn’t her place.

Mazikeen froze, her senses suddenly invaded by the sound of rushing water and scents she wasn’t familiar with. She had never seen this place before, she was confident in that much. For a moment, all she could do was stand still, her mind racing to try and figure out what, exactly, had happened.

Dragomir stirred.

Rebirth, reborn. Thrust out into this world to become the problem of another. He had not yet spotted the mountain that loomed just beyond. Too covered by the thick trees that cloaked the vale. Yet he allowed himself to move on calculated but heavy steps towards the sound of soft rolling water. A lake lapped at an edge somewhere and he was inclined to meet it.

Only to spot her.

Darkly colored and frozen where she stood. He might have thought her made of ice if she so clearly was not a living thing. Perhaps she had never seen this lake before too. With its grand expanse and beauty. Only in a brief look around did he notice the mountains that raised like spires in the sky, not that he was free of the trees and hills that contorted the lands.

“Afternoon,” Best to start neutral.

Had she fallen into some sort of alternate dimension? Had she fallen asleep? Was this still a dream? The afterlife? Mazikeen had never before experienced anything even remotely like this before, and the gears in her mind were turning over and over again trying to make sense of it when she was interrupted.

Maz did not like being surprised. She liked being surprised multiple times in a row even less - a new location, a new wolf. This didn’t make sense - why would this man just approach her like this was a common, everyday occurrence?

Fortunately for the both of them, Maz had been raised properly, and didn’t give in to her initial instinct to snap and demand answers. Tension was clear in the lines of her body, defensive and coiled like a band about to snap, but her voice was calm when she replied:

“Afternoon,” she echoed, arching a brow at the strange man. “I don’t think we’ve met before.” An invitation to introduce himself.
